  • Standard response will be if you can afford it, iPad is better than everything else. If you've got a medium to high budget then go for a Samsung tablet and if you're looking dirt cheap then there's many Chinese clones and cheap products, although be wary of them sending your data back to China etc.

  • Can you provide more information about your budget and usage? Why do you want a tablet ?
It’s not going to take good photos…

Can you get a refurbished iPad and a point and shoot?

Getting a tablet and a point and shoot is honestly the best way to go.

Point and shoots give you optical zoom, which is a key difference to tablets/phones.

Depending on your budget there are a huge range of options. A second hand canon s90/s95 (and sometimes the s100 which does 1080p video) can be found for around $100 on ebay and Gumtree every now and then and remain exceptional cameras to this day especially for their price point (and 3rd party spare batteries are liks $10). At the higher end the RX100 (any generation) is the best point and shoot you can buy - a second hand MkI will probably set you back $300, or you can buy new and claim TRS. Alternatively, a travel zoom like the TZ90, which shoots 4k video as well as having an impressive zoom range can be had for $400 right now (but they aren't as good as the s90/s95 or RX100 in low light/indoor)

If all you need is email/browsing then any tablet will do. Entry level iPads are $400 and entry level samsung galaxy tab A is $300. There are definitely cheaper android options.

Getting two fit for purpose devices will likely give you more options and at a lower cost.

  • use your phone. if you already have a phone and are thinking you need a tablet, you wont use the tablet at all.
time to put the silicon obsession down. enjoy europe

The only reason to take a tablet is for when you want to browse the Internet a lot. Otherwise a smartphone suffices for email and photos. I am always amused by tourists wielding big tablets to take holiday photos.

If you're stopping by Amsterdam, I hear you can get a large variety of tablets on the street there. Or maybe in some clubs.

Otherwise, it really depends on what you intend to do with it. If you really want to take photos and presumably videos with it (don't .. your phone will probably be better), I'd probably look at a Samsung Tab S3 just for the micro SD slot. I'd go for a used one though, they're better value.

If you're going to be carrying around and whatever apps you want to use is available on Android, I would probably still get a Tab S3 as it's much lighter (434g vs 692g).

Tablets are the worst cameras you could think of.

A DSLR is bulky (con) but take the best photos (pro).

A phone is small (pro) but take serviceable photos (neutral).

A tablet is bulky (con) and take terrible photos (con).

    • iPad Pro 10.5 camera is the same 12 megapixel in iPhones (the most used camera in the world). It’s hardly rubbish for daily use and some people prefer to view them on the big screen straight away. Yes it’s unwieldy and looks stupid taking photos with a large slab but hardly the ‘worst’.

      • for the price you can get a point and shoot, and a separate tablet.
Leave the tablet in the room and take the point and shoot when you're out.
10.5 would be terrible to carry around all day.

Tablets don’t come cameras that are nearly as well designed as phone cameras – because most people don’t take photos with a tablet.
After holding it up for a while the weight of it will cause your hands to shake and make the photos blurry.
You would need a waterproof case to be able to take photos if it is raining.
Depending on which one you choose, the battery life may not cope well with a full day of photo taking.

If you’re concerned about backing up your photos
    - Get a camera with wifi, or a wifi enabled SD card
    - Get a tablet that accepts SD cards, and buy a camera that takes SD cards, so you can back them up at the end of the day.
    - Upgrade your phone to one with a good camera and use that.

Not true. iPad Pro has the same fantastic 12 mp camera in iPhones.
