Which One Is a Good Overseas Travel Cover for a Person over 50 Visiting Australia?

Hello,

I am a PR holder working in Melbourne. My mother is going to visit us for a year on a travel visa. Just wondering what would be a good insurance provider to go with for Overseas cover?

Currently looking into:
Bupa,
Allianze,
Nib,
Medibank

She is 53 years old, we were not able to get her insured before her visit because of time constraint.

Any input is appreciated.

  • unlikely you will be able to without great cost given the trip has commenced.

how is she here on a 1-year tourist visa?

    • Do you mean cost is different if you do it after arriving in australia?
She is here on "VISITOR (Class FA) VISITOR (Subclass 600)" which allows either 3 months, 6 months or a year period.

  • So she landed in Australia now?

    • Yes, She has arrived last Saturday.

  • Why didn’t she get travel insurance in her home country ? I thought you needed it to get a visa?

  • +1

Was sailing in same boat a few months ago and discovered, local HF cover is limited to what MediCare pay's for that service for resident, can't co-relate why overseas cover is related to Medicare when they are not entitled or anything to do with Medicare. overseas covers is a ripoff, even going to top cover you end up paying a huge out of pocket expenses.

  • First, go to the local gp clinics to find out their fee structure for overseas visitors. Some clinics will allow direct bill insurance companies, some require upfront payment and you can claim the money back. As a gp who deals with all above insurances, Allianz seemed to be the easiest to claim and not too many questions asked. If your mother get admitted to hospital, then bupa and Medibank will want you to go to gp and get the hospital specialist to fill forms to declare it’s not pre exisiting or they will not cover the entire stay. I do not recall such problem is rampant with Allianz. Obviously read all product pds before you decide. Generally speaking all pre exisiting condition requires one to be insured for more than 12 months to be covered.

  • Hi sandeep, I got insurance from Allianz for my 72 year old mother. Process was online and smooth, got the card in a week. Cancelled on phone when she was about to leave. No hassle. Having said that, we didn't need to claim anything, so don't know how good they are if you need to make a claim

  • If you're still looking, Medibank is probably cheapest and easiest to process though there is also a company called Iman. Check and compare.

  • Hi sandeepparekh9,

what did you end up choosing?? I am in the same situation as you.

    Thanks,

  • What country is she from? Some have reciprocal agreements that mean Medicare will cover public hospital treatment. I know UK and NZ definately do, but I believe there are other countries too.

    • Hi onevstheworld,

Not from one of the reciprocal agreements country…

      Thanks,
