Tailor Made Suit in Malaysia

Hi all, heading to Malaysia in July for a wedding as a guest and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for places to get suits tailor made while I'm there? My goal would be to get a good quality suit made which I can wear for the wedding, but also as a business suit when I'm back in Oz.

I'll be there for 2 weeks and the wedding is the day before I fly out so there's just under 2 weeks to get it made. Is that doable?

Also, hope this is not a silly question but do guests wear suits to weddings in Malaysia given the heat? I know the ceremony and reception will be in a hotel so it should be air-conditioned.

I don’t remember specific stores but taxis will happily take you to a local tailor shop (where they get commission) and you’ll be sized up then shown hundreds of fabric samples. Choose the style, material and colours you want and it’s usually tailored overnight and waiting at hotel reception for you in the morning. If the sizing is a bit off, pop back in to the store and they’ll adjust for free. Same applies in Thailand and other countries.

The suits are typically sent to China and only the final adjustments are done in Malaysia. Proper canvassing is a high level skill.

It is not different than most bespoke tailors in Melbourne. Nothing wrong with that business model and I've had suits done that way.

Some businesses use top end tailors in China and I have had better suits than a fully custom Ermenegildo Zegna made for under $4,000 with TotL Dormeuil.

OTOH, I have had "generational" tailors butcher thousands of dollars worth of fabric.

This link has a compilation of suit tailors in or around Kuala Lumpur. http://says.com/my/lifestyle/where-to-find-the-best-tailors-…

In terms of dress code, it really depends on what wedding it is. Malaysia is multicultural so, there’s Chinese wedding, Malay wedding and Indian wedding.

Are you part of the wedding party? If so, they might specify what they would like you to wear. I don’t think that there’s a need for a suit for the reception.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks that’s great info!

It’s a Chinese wedding and I’m not part of the wedding party, just a guest. They are both 2nd generation Australian so probably won’t be into the whole traditional dress thing.

So if not a suit, just a nice long sleeve shirt and tie?

The venue is fairly fancy though - Ritz Carlton hotel - which is giving me pause. Maybe I’ll just straight up ask them. :)
