Beware of Unsolicited Calls from Chinese Scammers Posing as Embassy/Police

There's a group of scammers from China who are posing as employees of the Chinese Embassy, they will also direct you to a Beijing police department.

If you speak Chinese:
Please do not respond to these calls. The Chinese police cannot arrest you in Australia without contacting the Australian police, and they won't call you to let you know they are coming. Police officers in general don't ask you to transfer money or ask you about your bank account.

I've heard a lot of people, especially Chinese international students and elderlies are getting scammed of all their money (Myself, family and co-workers have all received these calls regardless of ethinicity). The police are aware of this scam. However, there isn't much they can do.

I know that the Ozbargain community are very sharp, but I think it's good to spread the awareness of this scam before it's too late.

  • Download Mr Number app on your phone, and let it block all calls from the number. Done.

the calls come in with a faked caller ID, and they keep changing them

Scams happen every where, all the time, by every nationality, ethnicity, culture, religion, spirituality etc.
Why should this one be any different and be posted here?

Op try to warn you about new breed of scammers, nothing wrong with that.

Yeah I know and it's good, but there are scammers everywhere.
It just pays to be vigilant, receiving any kind of phone call stating you're in trouble or have won a prizes should set of alarm bells, and if someone makes a claim ask for ID.
So kudo's to OP, but IMHO it's not necessary.

So it has taken you two postings to complain about someone posting about a scam that doesn't apply to you. My suggestion is you ignore these sort of postings and just move on. It being posting does not affect you one iota but you needing to take time to reply does. Just look elsewhere.

      Nice try, Chinese scammer.

  • So that what it's about. I keep getting random calls from a number and when I pick up all I hear is Chinese music.

I think they just want to give chinese music some international exposure :)

Does the Chinese embassy take iTunes gift cards?

  • Police officers in general don't ask you to transfer money or ask you about your bank account.

Police don't do bribes? That's disappointing.
