~$300 netbook

I'm looking for a 10" netbook for around $300 after missing out on the eMachines EM350.

I'm happy to spend a bit more if I can justify it.

I'll mainly use it for school work, which is why I want the portability.

EDIT: I just realized I need at least a 6-cell battery so I bumped up the budget

  • i would say it is near impossible to find any new notebook at this price
my best bet would be to buy off ebay @ $200+, max i would pay is $250, but remember the $39 cashback so therefore it will be $210, so if i were to do so i would do it

honestly to tell you the truth, most of these netbooks, have the similar specs as the em350, with most vary the cell of the battery. and those netbooks have a price range of about $150 above the cost of the OW ($200 RRP $299)

  • LFO has one for $199 - back to school special

EDIT: Oops, just realized you're from melbourne, not sydney…

    • Why can't I get it if I'm from Melbourne? Don't they have delivery?

      • Yeah they do, not sure about the charges though

    • i'll post that so people know

  • Hello davos,
i have posted abbz0id's $199 EM350, and i put it in that if people are willing to ship to you for a price, i think you should pay say $240 max(of which $39 could be made to cashback, dropping to price to $201), this will make both people, the seller and you happy, as you are not paying RRP and seller is getting profit from shipping cost, if so, can you please place your max price you are willing to pay so that i could post info on my post?

    • I've changed my mind about the EM350, I need something with a 6-cell battery. It's still a good deal though.

      • haha yea
i got at 403 access denied error
        what i typed was that:
you could get a 6 cell battery for $40 or so dollars, therefore about price of cashback, and therefore you are paying mid $250s for the netbook you want with a 6 cell battery

        • I really can't be bothered going to all that trouble, especially knowing the eBay battery will probably be as good as the 3-cell one. Also, the laptop isn't really meant for a 6-cell, which will make it stick out a lot compared to one that came with it stock.

        • Almost EVERY netbook with 6-cell will have a "stick-out" battery. There's only room for 3 cells at the back, but most 6-cell packs stick downwards to provide a bit of keyboard slant.

  • +1

seriously, hold on, by the time you start uni, i can almost guarantee we will get a new sub $300 laptop

  • I got a Lenovo S10-3 from OrangeIT for $315 - nice machine indeed. 250GB, 6 cell, inbuilt bluetooth and 3xUSB which is better than the EM350 with 160/3 cell/2xUSB and no BT. Plus the Lenovo has stereo speakers, the EM350 is mono.

They are now selling them at $329 on ebay or $50 more for 2GB of RAM (bit of a ripoff but the Lenovo is fussy re: RAM)

    • How's the touchpad? I just read some reviews and they said it is awful.

      • Touchpad is fine (but yeah I read the same reviews) - better than the EM350 I reckon. It's just a bit different to other brands… it's metal (not plastic) and is has a small "groove" around it - the reason being that it is floating.

You press the thing on the lower area to click the mouse - it's got microswitches underneath. You can also ignore that and just tap it like a normal touchpad if you like, then only use the physical movement for right click.

However, it does take a bit of configuration to get the sensitivity and speed set up nicely - out of the box it's a bit too fast. I also switched on inertia, which means the pad acts like a touchscreen on a smartphone, so you can "flick" the cursor… it keeps moving when you remove your finger, then slowly comes to a halt (excellent, much easier to use).

There's heaps of settings - inertia, speed, sensitivity, accelleration, pinch zoom, the various scrolling modes (or disable for more space), etc. After maybe 3 tweaks and 10 mins tops, it's fine. I didn't find any real problem at all… and the shallow touchpad (no separate buttons) means a taller keyboard.

  • Just bought the s10-3t for $333.00 from HT with 8 cell etc its the s10-3 but with touchscreen etc

keep looking around especially at HT officeworks and HN there is some really good deals going at the moment

    • How did you manage that? I can't find the touchscreen on their site.

      • They had a quite a few notebooks really cheap, there was only one of this model though.

    • you seem to snap up all the good deals from ht mikinoz. :/ ht is a bit far for me :P

      • Hehe, i know :) this laptop was in Vic and i had it shipped up to me in North Ryde was 14.00 shipping and came on the 2nd day after order, better than i expected

  • I just posted one - you'll have to be fast (Ozbargain one-day, ends lunchtime)
