New NSW Law to Stop Ticket Scalping Comes into Effect 1st of June

Sick and tired of ticket scalpers? Yeah, me too… but if you're desperately looking to get tickets to that sold out show, then just wait a few more days.

From June 1st NSW will enforce laws that prohibit:

  • the use of bots to buy tickets

  • any resale price greater than 10% of the original ticket cost

  • events from refusing to outline how many tickets are for sale (Government must ask for this figure though)

Fines are up to $22,000 for individuals and $110,000 for companies, as well as a cancellation of the tickets. So if you're in NSW and see tickets being sold for ridiculous prices after June 1st, report the bastards and have the last laugh.

  • Good luck enforcing it, will cost the government more to implement successfully than it would be impacting the industry

My hope is that the Tickestmaster Resale page and Viagogo conform. As for Ebay and Gumtree that's a different matter - but accounts that have built a reputation for being reliable resellers will probably close or go straight, making it more unpredictable and less attractive an option.

      • Agreed to be honest, sure Government itself may not enforce the small person trying to sell the tickets, but if someone sees a ticket for sale on eBay or Gumtree that breaks the law, they'll probably report it and it'll probably get taken down. Hopefully it will give a chance for more fans to enjoy the show!

    They should also stop brodens

  • How will a NSW law stop people from doing things online, they can just claim they live elsewhere

  • Great. Good to see politicians helping the average honest consumer. Will be interesting to see how successfully this is implemented and enforced. For example, a scalper could operate from an overseas address buying up tickets in Australia. Will this law do anything to stop that happening?

    • If identified the tickets will be cancelled without a refund
