Paying Uni Fees with Credit Card for Bonus FF Points

Hi Folks,

I'm starting a post-grad uni course in August (2 units x 4,000 Fees each) and have the money ready. I was wondering if there is a Frequent Flyer or Rewards Credit Card with free/low annual fees and high bonus that recognises uni fees as eligible spend?

Below are my current cards:
- Suncorp Qantas Platinum - Fee free, Packaged w/ mortgage
- David Jones Amex (black) - Commenced April 2018, Bonus received, used only for 3 FF per $1 at supermarkets and petrol stations
- ANZ Black FF - Spend reached, awaiting bonus FF points to be deposited before cancelling.

I cancelled my Platinum Velocity AMEX in April 2018 and plan on waiting 12 mths for next 100K bonus.

Currently the best options appear to be
- ANZ rewards (first yr fee, 75,000 bonus Reward Points)
- Bendigo Bank ($149 fee, 60K Qantas FF)

Appreciate any advice you might have

  • Most probably do. You probably would be paying extra merchant fees for using a CC, compared to bpay from a debit account.

  • Some unis take payment by visa or MasterCard but the fees didn't make it worth it for me. See what fee yours charges.

    • ANZ rewards (first yr fee, 75,000 bonus Reward Points)

I pay mine using my AMEX.

My uni offers Post Bill Pay. This then allows me to use Paypal which has my Amex linked to it. No fees.

Postbillpay/Paypal/Amex route only earns 0.5ppd now I think. From April 2018

      • Do you have a link to a thread or anything that discusses this? This is concerning :(

        • I tested it out. You can test it out with a small $5 or $10 payment. If it's directly Paypal->Amex such as on Telstra that's still ok. But if you do via Postbillpay apparently it's now 0.5ppd.

        • @lilkid28: Yes can confirm this. Made transaction 3 weeks back and awarded only 0.5ppd

You’ll have to wait 18 months before you can try for another big Amex bonus. You should also read the others posts on Oz Bargain re credit scores.

  • Melb Uni charge 0.35% on Mastercard/Visa. Is it worth it?

    • They know how to make money!

  • Hi all. I was looking into pay Melbourne uni with CC. Looking to get the Qantas premier platinum with 100k bonus points.
I have been reading and for the transaction to be passed as an eligible transaction, it has to be prosesed as a purchase and not a bill. Has anyone ever paid melbourne uni with CC and get QFF. Or anyone knows if melbourne uni will process the transaction as a bill or a purchase.
