Amex Travel Credit vs Annual Fee

Hi guys, I have noticed that Amex has given me the travel credit early and the annual fee has not been charged yet. Just wondering, if I use up the travel credit then cancel the card, will they make you pay the annual fee?

  • They will do a final statement after you close the card which I'm guessing 99% sure would turn include the annual fee. How far of is the fee?

    • Due in 2 weeks

  • Yeah the first statement includes the annual fee, no way you can get around it.

    Ignore the comments above.

You can cancel your card up to 1 month after the membership anniversary and your annual fee will be refunded whether or not you have used your travel credit.

So yes, you can use next year's travel credit and not pay the annual fee.

    • I called them and asked about this and they told me the opposite. Hence, I just cancelled my amex card which had $195 annual fee

        What exactly did you ask?

"Hi, can I use next year's travel credit and not pay next year's annual fee?"

If I was working there, I would advise otherwise as well.

    • @ronnknee Have you done this before? Would be a nice little bonus

      • Yep, twice. Platinum Edge $200 travel credit and Velocity Platinum free flight.

        • Good to know. Thanks guys for all your input.

  • Just an update. NO, the travel credit does not work. It may appear in your account but when you try to redeem it, it will apply initially however when you confirm the booking, it will fail. Once failed, you will no longer see the credit on the account.
