Belong $40 15GB Sim Won't Activate

I got given a sim card by a friend who buys boxes of stuff cheaply on gumtree and he had many new sim cards.

I tried to activate the brand new and sealed sim card but it is saying on the website - We don't have a record of your SIM purchase as it can take up to 24 hours to be confirmed. Please try again in a couple of hours.

I don't know where the items have come from, but how do sim cards like these usually work? Does the store need to activate something in their computer before it can be signed up and activated online? I notice lots of sellers are selling this same sim card, so obviously they don't need an id. Or do they? Could that be why it doesn't work?

    Seems it was never activated/stolen.

They keep boxes of these easy reach at places like JB Hi Fi. But, if they don't activate it before you leave the store it is useless.

    • That may be the case. I was not sure if it could be activated online or not. Thanks for your help. Does that mean people selling them on ebay would have their name linked to the sim?

No, the unblocking when you buy it and activating it are two different things. Sounds like you got sold a stolen sim.

        • So a store can unblock it when you purchase it? And if its not unlocked or activated it is just a worthless sim card with no use?

@drspy00: that's right, if it wasn't bought and unlocked at the time it is just a bit of plastic nothing more.

What did Belong say when you spoke to them?

  • If you purchased via Paypal, and had activated their free return, you're good to complain it's not as described.
