Scheduled NBN Cabling for Apartment Complex (Western Sydney)

Hey guys,

I just got an email from my strata manager asking our strata committee to approve for some contractors to come and install NBN cabling in our roof, apparently so that our building will be "NBN enabled". The email forwarded by the contractor states that need access to the roof space of our unit complex only, and after the installation, we would each receive a letter from NBN to let us know we can order NBN service from our own service provider?

Does anyone have any experience with this and have had people come to do the same thing at your residence? I just haven't heard anything about it prior to this. I'm in Parramatta area in NSW if that helps. The contractor attached a copy of his work photo ID, their ACMA registered licence and "design map" for construction. I guess it sounds legit.

Thanks for your advice in advance!

    • That link didn't work, thought I found the right one. But apparently ACA have other NBN Nightmare stories on the actual rollout.

  • Yep, I had the same thing happen to me, first it was a letter, than a phone call to make a time, they said they needed to run "some cables"… What is this thing called NBN?

  • It has been organised by your strata manager, so what are your concerns exactly?

    • I guess I am a bit paranoid about it, being out of the blue and my strata manager has asked us to "approve" this work. I would have thought that strata would have vetted this contractor already and just "notify" us of the work needed. I'm no expert.

Asking the Ozb community who live in units if this is a thing and anyone got similar work done.

This is just the normal strata process. Any work done to your building needs the approval of at least (I think) half of the residents. Read the documents properly and see what kind of work is involved, and what costs it might attract.

In any case, for NBN to work, they are either pulling in HFC coaxial cables or optic fiber cables if you're lucky enough to get FTTP. If you don't approve it, you won't be getting any NBN, I suppose.

This is the normal process for installing NBN at apartment blocks. I went through the same thing in Darwin and am the chairperson of the body corporate committee. Technically they need permission to access any telecommunication facilities that are not publicly accessible. In my situation, NBN co contacted us to ask how they can access our telecom stuff, and we responded saying it's all open, no fence or anything so go for your lives. The only thing you should be wary of is if anyone tries to charge you for this process. The upgrade is free of charge thanks to our tax dollars. The only charges you may incur will be from your internet provider directly, not anyone else. Oh and NBN co and their contractors are notorious for not turning up at scheduled times (at least in the NT anyway). They may schedule an appointment with you to finish off the the upgrade inside your apartment. If this happens, try to get someone who isn't working to stay at home and meet them. Because if you have to take a day off work it could be a giant waste of time and unnecessary loss of income for you.
