My Car Was Towed through M4, Should I Pay The Toll?

Long story short, my car had broken down and it was towed through M4 with e-toll tag on. I should have removed the tag but silly me for not thinking about it!

Now I can't shake off my thoughts of stupidly wasting $4.74 for nothing.

Should I be paying the toll? If not, should I make an effort to call up and get a refund. It's only $4.74… What are my chances of getting the toll refunded?

In my experience with toll operators they are useless, I’d only call once and ask for the charge to be credited back.
If it works, great if not well it’s not a huge loss…

You were not driving the car and the car was not in your control at the time, hence you shouldn't be paying the toll - the tow truck would've paid a higher toll for being a bigger vehicle effectively compensating anything that it's towing.

If you got roadside assistance to tow the vehicle, obtain some evidence of attendance from them then call to have the toll reversed. I'm sure they'll be happy to help.

Asking a bunch of strangers on an anonymous online forum probably won't.

Yeah, tolls road operators are always looking to hand money back because they're happy.

      Sounds legit.

      • If you have a reasonable excuse, you might find that they're obliged to reverse the tolls whether they like it or not.

  • What did the toll company say when you called them?

That they would base their decision on the results of an ozbargain poll

"The ozBikies will be there in five minutes"

    • I havent called them since it was late at night when i thought about this last night.
I was thinking about it the whole night and couldnt sleep, hence the post.

I checked my e toll statement but it hasnt come through. Maybe i ll wait for a couole of days before calling them. Or is it possible than the M4 gate is smart enough to detect 2 tags passing through the gate at almost the same time on the same lane and only take the first one, ie: the tow truck.

I think the real issue is why does a $4.74 toll keep you up at night worrying? Are you ok?

I had my car towed in Melbourne on the Tulla Freeway and called CityLink and explained it was on a tow truck. They refunded me the tolls for the journey.

    • same with me. Got into an accident and the car was towed to an Altona location for inspection. Called up CityLink and explained it to them and they refunded me the money

If your car was towed through the gate facing backwards, they should not only refund your toll but pay you $4.74 in addition. :D

    • This is the only correct answer.

You’ve already wasted more time on this than it’s worth.

Just pay it and move on and enjoy life. You used the road technically anyway so who cares
