Contents Insurance Providers - Which ones have 'Specified Personal Items' to include mobiles?

So we're currently with Allianz for contents insurance, about $125k of contents plus wedding rings, laptop & 2x mobiles. This runs to about $34 per fortnight (i.e. $884 a year). I've got my mobiles listed on the policy as specified items which means in the event of a screen breakage, we have a $100 excess. Thankfully, the couple of times I've had to claim I've had minimal problems, so I am sure they're insured properly.

This works out much better than the Optus Protect/Cover/'Whatever it's currently called' for $14 per month per mobile, plus the excess - which is $100 for damage, or $200 if the device is stolen.

I'd like to shop around for a better deal on the remaining contents insurance, mostly to reduce my excess in the event of accidental damage (toddlers!) but most providers don't have this 'specified personal effects' cover that includes mobiles (usually buried on the T&Cs that they're excluded even if listed). What other insurance providers do you use that DO include mobiles?

Amex cards have mobile screen repair insurance now, if that impacts your decision.

    • Haven't got Amex - though with a part-time job & no disposable income, I doubt any bank will be willing to change this situation!

…Unless there's a deal for low-doc/entry requirement Amex cards around??

  • I have QBE contents insurance with zero excess on general portable contents. I have not itemised phones, which means broken screens are basically covered, but a lost or stolen one wouldn't 100% because there is a $1000 per item limit, $5000 per claim.

Have claimed once for broken screen with no issues.

I have used Suncorp contents insurance to claim mobile phones in the past, and it falls under 'unspecified items' - $100 min excess and you can determine how much you want covered with min. $1000. You could do an online quote and see if its a better price.

APIA covers mobile phones under unspecified portable contents, I have $100 excess and $1000 claim limit

    • Sounds good… in another 20 years, sadly.

At least now I'm finally recognised by insurance companies that I can, in fact, drive a car given I'm over 25. That "Under 25's are Dangerous" statistic has been costing me quite a bit of money until recently!
