Lexus CT200h or Audi A3 Sportsback 1.8 2.0T

Hey guys,

Which one would you choose out of the two?

Just a general question and wanting to see what others think, we already knows ones an electric hybrid and extremely fuel efficient. But why else would you choose one over the other?

Lexus reliability vs Audi. Does the Audi use a dual-clutch-transmission? If so I'd definitely choose the Lexus.
If buying new I hear Lexus service is second to none in the motor industry.
    (Have never owned either though).

    • Which clutch system is the more reliable in the Audi?
Use of the word reliable in its loosest terms*

      • I've driven regular autos, CVT's, manuals & I think all are fine.
Heard horror stories with dual-clutch reliability & once test drove a late model Mondeo with dual clutch transmission that failed while taking it on a test drive.. had to limp back to the dealer in limp mode (& it was only a two year old car at the time). I like to keep my cars for a long time and hate having to deal with car problems so value reliability highly.

Most Audi's use dual clutch (VW & Skoda too)so off my menu but the Audi S5 comes with a regular auto transmission & would be one of my dream cars.. just you know, another $60k or so ;)

      • There are dry clutches and wet clutches. The dry ones are the ones with a terrible track record, like the stories Ighulm has shared.

        Wet ones are fine.

To the uninformed, this mistake is the same as tainting all hybrids as slow just because they drove a Prius.

        • Both are still incredibly complex transmissions with higher & more expensive failures than standard autos. Applies to both dry & wet clutch but will grant you less of an issue in wet DCT's but still an issue.

They also require a different style of driving..

..and Prius was relatively nimble for tootling about a city.. you could still beat most off at the lights but not on a dragstrip against something built for it ;)

i think both are overrated and pretty ugly, id lean towards the lexus

have you looked at the new focus rs?

They want something reliable, not an under engineered piece of garbage from a bunch of tax dodgers

      • Fords after sales service generally speaking is some what far from desirable also.

  • A3 sedan looks much better than the sportsback IMO

If you want a Lexus you need to at least get an IS

    • Definately, in the midst of considering the IS300.

How long are you intending to keep said vehicle?
If the answer is any time period beyond the warranty, I would personally chose the Japanese manufacture.

Are you sticking you hand in your own pocket or is a company purchasing the car?

This is OZB. after all, so I ask, have you considered the 2019 spec Corolla?
You can now tick the box for a Hybrid option across the Corolla range.
A top spec Corolla with the hybrid power train would be a considerable saving over the Lexus branded spec unit.

I contemplated just YOLOing it and buying the latest Audi RS3 for quiet some time.

    • Haha I did contemplate very long about the rs3 but settled for an s3 instead. I mean 30k more for awesome exhaust note and power but will have to take a massive depreciation hit later on down the track and also rather use the extra money towards my apartment. With regards to the 2 cars, I would say a lexus would be the better choice if you are going to hold it above the warranty period. Depreciation for both are pretty high so maybe good to look at other options as well and not just stick to these 2.

      • Yes the S3 is far more sensible choice.
If only VAG had their crap together

        • Hahaha yeah… if I did a stage 1 pretty much is as close to an RS3 but bye bye warranty as Audi flags it as a TD1 in their system immediately when you go for service and plug it to the Audi central computer and they wont honour any engine or powertrain related stuff which includes the gearbox which can be a hit and a miss. I will let go of the car just before warranty is up hahaha as you said since they cant get their crap together… but so far have not heard anything drastically catastrophic with the FL S3s but then again too soon to say since they only got released last year.

    • Hi Cheap Charlie,

The car would be for a family member.

We generally keep our vehicles for a period of 3 years then sell them on and so on.

Will be paying out of my own pocket unless someone is kind enough to lend me their pockets :D

The top spec corolla has definately been considered, doesn't look half bad

Did you end up purchasing the RS3? Sweet ride, but the person in question does not need such a beast haha

  • What's the main difference between the Ambition variant and Attraction?

  • Lexus > Audi.

    More reliable.

    More fuel-efficient.

    Cheaper to service.

Indicator stalk on the correct side.
