Don't Be a Dumbass Like Me, Keep a Record of When You Close Credit Cards

I was wondering why the bonus points on my new ANZ card were taking so long to post. Emailed them and got the following response. Going to try to plead stupidity here but I guess lesson learned.

Our records indicate that when you opened your current Frequent Flyer Black Credit card (07/03/2018) you had previously closed another Frequent Flyer Platinum Credit Card on the 10/03/2017 which makes you ineligible for the bonus Qantas Frequent Flyer points offer.

I didn't forget I had the card, I thought it had been a year and I was nearly right.

There's no mention of any such 'year' in your post, it's relevance nor of any relation to time beyond a previous card having existed. I may have misunderstood, but if someone asks you to tell you what happens in a film they haven't seen you don't start at the halfway point.

        • You've been on OzB for 3 years - how are you not at least aware that bonus pt offers on credit cards always have a "you cannot have had a card with us in the past X-time period" condition? Because otherwise, someone would just cancel their card immediately, sign up again, and get the bonus.

Is it wise to use credit cards when they increase the amount of money you lose though?

      Huh?
If you're losing money using a credit card, you're using it wrong…

Google calendar entry for one year after you close it..
    Simple

    Rookie. Reported to the mods.
Hand in your OzBargain badge on the way out.

    • Wait, so is it a OzB licence or badge that I should be applying for?

FYI - most banks are helpful in confirming closure dates. Last time I checked with ANZ, they confirmed their actual date of closure, which was slightly later than my records.

Might be worth a double check, and allow a margin of a few days/week to be sure.

    • Or ask for an email/letter confirming it’s closed. This way you’ll have the exact date and proof.

Sorry about that, I always apply 1 month later than the date I closed my my credit card to make sure I am eligible for the new card bonus point.

  • Always check last statement of your previous card when applying for a new card. There could easily have been a few days' delay between when you called to close your old card account to when it's actually closed in the system (eg if you've a closing balance that still needed to be settled).

  • related question about closing an AMEX card:

I closed my card, but i'm a secondary user with my own card on my girlfriends account. Will I still be eligible for a new signup bonus after a year of when I closed my account or will having a secondary card on my GF account interfere with this?

    • +1

No, being a supplementary cardholder doesnt interfere with that. Aslong as the primary cardholder isnt you - you're fine!

      • Oo, also good to hear! This would be a way to go 24 months and switch with player 2 while still reaping benefits, right?

  • +5

Follow up - they gave me the benefit of the doubt and credited the points :D

    • Well done!
Lesson learned for all of us
