How Big Is Your Plastic Bag Stash? How Long Will It Last?

As single-use shopping bags become extinct, I know I'm not the only one who has been hoarding them for the last 12+ months.

At a guess, I think I have 1500 bags which at my current usage rate of 1 a day will last around 5 years.

How many in your stash? How long will they last you?

Extra points for anyone in SA/TAS who still have bags in their collection following their respective bans.

  • Like 8, and I mostly use them to pack luggage once in a while. What are you using em for to use so many?

Soiled nappies and clothes. Hardly want to be putting poo/vomit covered clothes into any other bag to bring home when you're out.

Soiled shoes, wet bathers, rubbish, dog poo….I hardly see how anyone can live without them!

  • from coles website lol

For Click&Collect customers, groceries will be packed into Coles Better Bags, at a cost of 15c per bag.

    1500 bags in 12 months

Maybe you were part of the problem

    • Haha, perhaps. I'll be honest though - if they weren't phasing them out, no way I'd have that many.

I haven't exactly been sparing when bagging stuff at the self serve checkouts. I can assure you though - none of my bags will go without reuse!

  • I wish I could find the report but I remember reading something about the “benefits to the environment” being offset by people’s need to purchase more “plastic rubbish bags” for use around the home as the biggest second use for supermarket plastic bags was use as rubbish bags. I for one am all for anything that helps the environment as long as it actually helps.

You gotta think there'd be a net reduction in plastic bags once they're phased out….Even when factoring increased purchases of plastic rubbish bags

  • cockroaches love laying eggs in plastic bags, so if you do have a big stash beware

    • I'm very protective of my stash. Sealed in an airtight container - ain't no cockies gonna ruin my hard work!

  • I have a small amount from my last grocery shop. I use them for picking up after my dog on our daily walk. If not for grocery bags I would need to buy plastic bags anyway. My local Howard’s storage world had small bin liner bags (of about 25 I think) for $1 each on clearance so I have bought a few of them.

We have two I think. And that is due to other people giving us things in plastic bags. I haven't taken a plastic bag from a store in well over a year. My partner does occasionally, but with the ban coming in he is getting good at taking reusable bags with him. I wholeheartedly support the ban. There is far too much plastic in the world.

  • We dont use our dishwasher and havnt for years. We just fill it with gocery plastic bags. Its hard to close and would be pushing the thousands of bags…

      Oh wow…you're set for life!!

  • Anyone have any idea where I can increase my stash?

  • I have a pretty big stash that we still use to carry stuff.

  • I have <50 bags :( trying to find quality garbage bags to buy that actually fit my bins is a bit annoying.
