Grind Formula for De Longhi Dedica and Breville Smart Grinder

Hi All

I got on the Dedica and Breville Smart Grinder bandwagon and the machines are great.

But I m having trouble with drawing a double espresso shot. I have wasted a lot of coffee trying to draw a decent shot.

As the coffee grind holders (dont know what they are called) for dedica are pressurised its hard to get an idea.

Have any of you figured out the perfect grind time/grind size for espresso's?

I m normally a strong coffee drinker and am using the East Timor beans from McIvers at Vic Market.

Any other suggestions/tips?

not going to much help to you, as each bean and coffee machine will be different, and I have found that you will need to make minor adjustments as the bean ages.

personally, my grind settings are usually around the "esso" of "espresso" on the grinder's display, only way to be sure is through (a lot of) trial and error.

    • I guess i will stick to these beans and do trial and error!

      • Yeah, I find I have to dial in a new batch of beans every time, then slight adjustments as they age in the hopper over a week or so.
Think about different oil levels in each batch and what humidity will do to them over time.
Soon enough you will get a good feel for it and dialing it in will be over like 1-3 coffees.

I also found with the smart grindr I had to go really fine… And then tamp with a reasonably firm pressure. The idea is to create a seal through which the pressurised water can then permeate before pouring through. And agreed with the beans… Each week they'll change (if yr using a kilo bag for example) and temperature can make it difficult to judge too.
    Keep trying. Keep playing.

I have a breville smart grinder with a different delonhgi machine that has the same size portafilter. In general, I use grind sizes between 14-18 and about 12 seconds for a double shot. I have found that a really low pressure tamp is required when using the pressurised basket, almost just flattening the coffee and not much more. I bought a non-pressurised basket that fits the portafilter and in general I prefer the results with this. As has been said above, there are lots of variables such as bean type and freshness, but hopefully this gives you a starting point to experiment from.

    • Where did you buy a non pressurised basket? That would be most ideal. 14-18 is that for espressos? Not too coarse? I will give it a crack. Thank you!

I bought it a few years ago from Pullman espresso accessories for about $25. Having a look now, something like this should be fine. Those settings were for espresso
