Import Tax if Bought before July 1 but Shipped after?

I will buy $600 Aud phone next week from US eBay but the item will surely enter Australia after July 1. Will I have to pay import tax on it if that happens?

  • I don't know the answer to your specific question not why not buy it this week just to be safe?

Posting from US to Australia usually takes about 2 weeks so you might just make it in even if you buy it next week.

    • waiting for paycheck

      • Use a credit card

OP's apparently living paycheck to paycheck and you want them to put something (a luxury non-essential purchase) on credit?

        • @HighAndDry: if he's going to buy it anyway, why not use a credit card? There's usually an interest free period. It won't make any difference bought now or later.

If he physically doesn't have enough money right now, he shouldn't be buying it at all, and should probably be concentrating on rent, food, and bills (the way he buys it isn't relevant to whether he should buy it at all).

    • I still couldn't figure out by reading the link. I am dumb.

The laws at the time of purchase apply. When it actually ships is irrelevant.

This is not a border control tax, so its remitted at the time of purchase, just like it would be if you went in store and paid for something but gets shipped later.

    • So I dont have to pay the gst even if i buy a product say at may 30? Thanks

Bit late for May 30 now.

        • Sorry, I mean June 30
          lol
