Cheap UHD/4K Smart TV

Hi all,

I'm looking for recommendations on a cheap and reasonable 4K/UHD Smart TV. I used to have a Bauhn 48" but it gave up after a year (should I be surprised?! I did however get a full refund) now I'm looking to replace it. I'm looking at the Kogan 43" here https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-43-smart-hdr-4k-led-tv-se… for - $499 (was $399 a few weeks ago!) or this Polaroid from Big W - https://www.bigw.com.au/product/polaroid-40-uhd-smart-androi… for $349. There is also this from Kogan for $439 but I can't see a big difference between the 2x Kogan's listed https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-43-agora-smart-4k-led-tv-…

I'm after something between 40-50" and under $500 if possible, seems there's a couple of options that fit that criteria. Any other recommendations or words of warning?!

  • 49" for $249 at Big W which has a good review about the picture quality but a number of bad reviews about it breaking.

    • Haha wondering if it's worth the gamble lol…

Might as well go back to the Bauhn if it's a gamble. At least Aldi has easy basically automatic refunds in cases of it breaking.

  • Got one of these myself. Samsung PVA panel with the same control board as the non-smart Kogans. A bit more expensive but the longer warranty with a brick and mortar store seems to be worth it.

Don't waste your money on cheap rubbish.

You have stated that you Bauhn 48" kakked itself.
So basically you have spent probably $500 for it .. and now you want to spend additional $500 for another rubbish = $1K

By a name brand like Sony, LG, Samsung, spend once, get a real TV and you wont look back.

Well he did get a refund.. so he basically rented a cheap tv for a year for free! And it could maybe happen again :P

      • Regardless, the OP was watching a rubbish quality TV for a year and luckily got a refund for his time and logistics to claim. Hopefully they don't follow suit, buy another junk and then create another post asking advice for any issues they may have..

        I've got 3 4K TV's

        1 - LG OLED. 55B7T
        2 - LG LCD/LED. UH770T
        3 - JVC cheapie 48"

The JVC is still working and use it as a PC monitor. The colours are washed out, picture quality average and contrast ratio is poor. Considering it has 4:4:4 4K:60p it is nothing special. A mid range FHD brand name TV looks better
Can't really complain considering it was $326 Big W sale @ 2016 however in comparison with the others, throw it in the tip.
If I had go back in time to buy, I would save more and get something that I enjoy watching/viewing.
You pay for what you get

        Cheers

        • Looking for a decent 55 inch for pc monitor usage. Mainly gaming and media consumption.

Any pointers on best value in this range.

Looking at anything above 55 inches and good value mainly. Can fit a 60 inch or 75 inch even but the premium kind of skyrockets a bit above 65 inches I find for $ per inch.

        • @vinni9284: thanks bro these look like some great recommendations.

Really wanna get a tv soon because I have a PC coming end of this month so need a monitor to do essentially everything from gaming to YouTube to maybe even split screen on one big monitor different applications while I play or just multitask (4 open programs at once all visible same time on one screen) besides a really old 19 inch I have lying around.

Not sure if it is even from this decade but at least it's not CRT old and I think 1080p might be only 720p.

        • @AlienC:

How far are you going to sit away from the TV?

55" is really huge to sit 1 meter away. However tbh it will capture true 4K as you're close to it.

I had a 55" TV for a PC however it was too big and moved to a 48".

          Cheers

        • @vinni9284: not close but also not far

Main reason for big size is when I'm say just idling it becomes a very nice screen saver using the wallpaper engine.

It won't be on a desk if you are asking but about a metre or so away. But I have terrible terrible eyesight hence the much larger size needed.

I pretty much use a mobile device daily and this will be a complement to that and others such as my pc.

Yeah. Rather go big than small especially for this situation as it will be my bedroom TV per say.

As an example a 32 inch definitely wouldn't cut it for this situation.

        • @AlienC:

          No problems.

I guess you can go to JB or HN .. etc in person, move a meter away in a seating position in front of the TV you are interested in and see how it feels.

          Cheers

        • @vinni9284: I tried that and 65 and 75 inch feels ideal but only have the budget for 50-60 inches

  • Why do you want 4K for that size TV?
