Will Samsung Repair a Phone for Free if It Is out of Warranty and an Official Update Bricked It?

Hi, My S7 Edge has run out of warranty. I want to know what are my rights after my warranty has ended.
If an official OS update is available to download and I install it and worst case scenario it kills the device or bricks it. Am I entitled to a free repair as this is their fault and not mine?

In the past, Optus release an incorrect firmware update (for a different kind of CPU) which would stuff up the device GPU and Display showing straight dead pixel lines on the display. Optus and Samsung were able to fix it but if something like this happens again am I entitled to a free repair?

TL:DR Phone no longer has warranty. If a defective official update rolls out and brick device, am I entitled to a free repair.

  • Yes you are entitled to a free repair. You still have the consumer guarantees.

    • Thank you for the information.

  • Are you downloading it yourself off a site such as sammobile, and flashing it onto your own device? Is it the right update for whatever region your phone belongs to?

Not sure it'd be covered if you flash another regions software onto your device…

  • The S7 Edge isn't that old, so at most only a few months out of warranty.

I got my S7 repaired out of warranty a few weeks ago. Purchased it the first week it was released.

  • Excellent question! I updated my Samsung S7 recently and I thought the update had bricked it. It was unresponsive a number of times within the days after the download although it seems to have come good. I would wonder the exact same thing.
