Steps to Purchase A Car in NSW Going to Victoria

Hi everyone,

Is there anything we need to know when purchasing a car in NSW going to VIC?

What are the steps to ensure as a BUYER, from your experience or knowledge BEFORE driving back down? Please outline in dot points for easier reading.

*We've organised an inspection on the car.
*I know that Roadworthy is to be conducted again in my state VIC

Besides a sales receipt, what else do I need from the seller? Seller and buyer to fill in what they call a notice of disposal? Is this all?

Cheers guys

  • following as i'm interested in this too. used car prices are high in victoria compare to other states even after paying freight charges.

    • Definitely. The cars I'm looking at here can be 10-15k more in VIC.. Crazy

If you are going to drive it back, you will need an unregistered vehicle permit if it has no rego. If it has NSW rego, you will need to hand the plates in when you get back to Vic, as you will not be able to transfer the rego unless you have a NSW address.

Other than that, it’s the same process as buying in your own state.

    • View the car
    • Test the car
    • Sign paperwork for the car
    • Pay for the car
    • Take the car home.

If it is an interstate car, it will be treated as an unregistered vehicle. You will need to have an inspection done and fill out the relevant paperwork with Vic Roads.

    Register an Interstate Vehicle.

    • Note "If the interstate vehicle registration is current or not expired by more than 3 months and is going into the same name in Victoria, a RWC will not be required to register your vehicle in Victoria." so don't get excited by that link as you will definitely need a roadworthy.

  • some garages/mechanics/car yards are registered to do roadworthies for other states.

is the place you are buying the car from able to do a Vic roadworthy? or is there a place near by that does them?

I'd be looking into that. save you time and hassle of the transfer.

otherwise get the roadworthy and plates in NSW. drive to VIC. get VIC roadworthy and plates. return NSW plates for rego refund. it's a minor hassle,

    • can you refund an interstate rego though?

Yes. I did this with my car when I went back to live in NSW. Took the VIC plates in to the RMS, handed them over. Got a receipt for them and a few weeks later got a cheque from Vic Roads for what was left on the rego.

It would be easier for OP to cash in the rego on the way back to Vic. and get an unregistered vehicle permit to move it home. Get the RWC done in Vic

  • Transportation/fuel + RWC + registration could add up to a lot, damn
