Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Since there is the Acronis True Image Deal for $1 here's a similar program, which we use. It's very good and it is free. It is a backup app that can make live images of your drives. You can use these images for disk cloning, if you want, but it is also a great incremental backup app.

Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE provides a simple solution for backing up Windows-based desktops and laptops.

It’s so easy to install that users can be up and running in just a couple of minutes. And it’s just as easy to use. With Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE, users can back up endpoints to an external hard drive, network shared folder or a Veeam Backup & Replication™ repository. If a user’s system crashes, hard drive fails, or files get corrupted or accidentally deleted, they can recover whatever they need in minutes. Even better, Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE enables the creation of bootable recovery media, which helps users to fix issues with their machine which may prevent the operating system from booting, or even reset the Local Administrator account’s password.

This product is freeware (always free), so technically not really a "bargain" - but here's the free vs paid comparison sheet:

      Windows - https://www.veeam.com/veeam_agent_windows_2_1_editions_compa…
      Linux - https://www.veeam.com/veeam_agent_linux_2_0_editions_compari…
      VM - https://www.veeam.com/veeam_backup_9_5_free_vs_paid_comparis…

Considering the deal link here goes to a news release from 2015, it's been free for 3 years. This thread should probably be moved to discussion forums instead :)

      • I've been using it for years. It's a good always-free product.

        • I haven't used this product, mainly because majority of my use cases have required VM/server management and protection (not all features I need are in the free version).

I currently use a similar product (for around 2-3 years) called Paragon Backup & Recovery Free (https://www.paragon-software.com/free/br-free/) on my Windows 10 machine at home. Always good to have "reliable" alternatives around if/when backup solutions no longer meet requirements. :)

I actually PAID for O&O Backup - complete rubbish!
Back in the day, I couldn't fault Norton Ghost - but they decided to discontinue it and make users migrate to Symantec enterprise or Norton subscription based backup solutions.

Veeam really speciailizes in backing up virtual enviroments in Vsphere etc and is meant for businesses.

They just released an endpoint for free basically for free advertising as it wasn't hard for them to do and it doesn't impact their sales as they don't do the home or small business market.

This is a business grade solution for nothing,

  • Use it at home as well, just be aware that backing up to a locally attached device is going to be completely useless if you get hit by a crypto virus or similar..

Create a second user account on the machine which you use for the backups and then assign that account in the NTFS permissions Full access permissions to the drive while your normal account\everyone has only read permissions.

CryptoLocker won't be able to touch it and even if your machine dies or you lose the password etc you will still be able to restore.

      • Does the Veeam free agent actually let you specify an account to use? Not in front of it at the moment, but I thought it didn't… Mind you, I set it up aggggeessss ago so they might've added this.

        • Even if it doesn't you can always set the service it uses to run as a particular user which bypasses the issue.

          Most backups allow this.

        • Veeam also allows you to setup the backup repository using rotated drives. So you can use 2 or more USB drives so at least 1 is always offline in case of Crypto or something equally as devistating.
          https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agentforwindows/userguide/…

It's still a good idea to use least access permission as kasp mentioned, but the rotated drives will at least give you an extra layer of protection.

        • Use the windows "runas" command to run the backup client together with NTFS permissions. I've used that to prevent kids seeing directories but still be able to use data from them, even on Windows 7 home iirc

  • VEEAM is the best if you are looking for a backup solution.

  • I've been using this at home for years. Excellent product.
