Which Dashcam Should I Buy?

So I've found myself watching a lot of dashcam videos on YouTube which has got me worried. Not so much about everyday driving, but driving overseas.

In December I'm heading to Estonia and Germany with my wife and her parents for a 4 week driving holiday where I will be doing all of the driving.

I feel like it's a good idea to get a dashcam to protect myself from any scammers and brake checkers like I've seen in the videos, or even if I happen to have an accident (not that I'm planning on it).

I just have no idea about dashcams. I would probably put it in my car at home too, but I do 90% freeway driving in peak hour on the Monash and have never had so much as a close call (it's pretty difficult at 15-20km/h).

I haven't set myself a budget as such, being that it is really just for the holiday I don't need to go top of the range.

Can anyone with experience in such things please offer me some advice on a model that is simple to setup and attach to any vehicle, and is also going to record decent video day and night?

Thank in advance!

hey OP, have you binged watch Ozdashcams for hours at a time? it's too addictive.

did you see the one where the other car did something stupid and dash cam owner says "bloody (profanity)"?

    • Don't forget the comments about them bloody cyclists.

      • bloody cyclists

Could be a very accurate literal description..

    • and the ones where the driver laughs at people getting flashed for speeding/red light

  • I've got a Blackvue 650 (1 channel)

Great picture quality, not the cheapest camera though. Also has WiFi and cloud functionality.

  • xiaomi

  • Viofo A119

  • Blackvue 750s Dual channel. Not cheap but you get what you pay for

  • If it's just while your on holiday, get a Dashcam app for your phone & a cheap window mount.

  • I'm thinking of going Viofo A119 thanks to posts here. Problem is installing it neatly, (UGH!!!!) :( so much work.

  • I recommend you get the Iphone App "Car Camera DVR" by AppAnnex, a good iPhone holder (probably the suction cup Logitech one as well as a 2.5+amp USB charger so you can charge your iPhone while the dash cam app sucks away your battery.

The app allows you to record all your footage in set chunks, you can define how many chunks you want to store before it is recycled and also flag which movies you want to keep.

I used to use this app before I got my beautiful Blackvue 7502-2CH.

Also, as you are travelling and using what I assume is NOT your car, there is no real point in getting a really good Dashcam and installing it etc as it can be quite tricky (and ultimately you will need to remove it.
