Best Place to Buy New Rolex/Omega in Sydney

Hi guys.

I'm looking to buy a pair of Omega/Rolexs (engagement presents for ourselves) in Sydney.

Went into the Omega boutique at Martin Place was told price is fixed, no discounts. Rolex AD next door (Kennedy's) offered 5% on the spot. I suspect we could push it down further once we are ready to commit.

Admittedly it's the first place we've been into since everything else was closed last night. Will be checking out Shums in Haymarket later today.

Any suggestions or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Consideration List:
- OYSTER PERPETUAL, 34MM, 39MM
- SPEEDMASTER 38 CO-AXIAL CHRONOGRAPH
- MOONWATCH PROFESSIONAL CHRONOGRAPH 42 MM

  • I bought a rolex a few months ago from JFP in sydney and only got 5% off, I didn't really haggle much I suspect you could get at least 10% off if you really pushed. I know for Omega you should expect to get at least 15-20% off the rrp at any AD, so don't accept anything lower than that. Swiss concept in Sydney also offered 5% pretty easily on rolex.

    • Oh wow that's really interesting. Especially since the salesperson at the Omega boutique was very firm that they don't offer discounts. I am pretty taken aback when she said it as it was definitely contradicting what everyone online has been saying.

Yes I suspect I could push a bit more than 5% for the Rolex discounts given we are looking at two purchases and it is EOFY season so they might have targets to hit.

      • At the boutique you can’t/won’t get any discounts, you need to go to an AD.

I just saw you posted that you’re getting a entry level model (I assume stainless steel) this will make it tougher to get bigger discounts. I’d say you could still get 10% or close to it fairly easily though.

        • Went to JFP over the weekend. Initially offered 5% discount but after he spoke to the manager it went down to 3%, and that's for purchasing two watches. If one watch no discount. Best part they don't even have the colour for one of my watches so I can't put a deposit down for the one they have in stock since I risk losing the deposit for it since I'm not willing to pay full price for just one watch.

  • Rolex dress watches (i.e. Datejust)or Professional (i.e. sports)?

    • I've just updated the list. It's going to be an entry level Rolex - Oyster Perpetual (no date).

  • Also interested in the answer for either Melbourne or Sydney retailers. I want to buy an Omega Speedmaster Pro, was looking at Tax free in heathrow @ $5,166 approx when I'm there this month. Whats the going rate at an AD here with discount? Also passing through Changi enroute - anyone have an idea on the costs of duty free there?

    • That's a really good price! Is that for the Transparent Case back?

Standard model (not transparent case back) RRP here is $6,375 for the 42MM. I believe the GST is 8.7% so net price would be $5,820.38.

  • I might be a bit biased but from your list I would recommend going for Rolex over Omega, mostly because you mentioned you’re getting a pair and an OP looks much nicer on a lady than a speedy. But secondly because the OP is a much better all round watch, can be dressed down and up very well, whereas a speedy can never be a true dress watch.

    • I know exactly what you mean. The OP is just so clean (hence why we decided on the no date model too). Very tough choice

      • no love for constellation ?

I purchased two Rolex Datejust in Nov 2016, and got 10% off

    • Was this in Sydney? If yes are you able to share which store?

  • For a his and hers, I'd get the OYSTER PERPETUAL 39mm for you and 36mm for her.

I think 34mm is a tad too small, I think the 36mm is a much more popular size, especially if you decide to sell it later on.

    • She was keen on the 36mm as well however it didn't have the Olive Green colour that she was after.

      • Don't compromise, wait for a 36mm or purchase elsewhere.

        • I should have rephrased that. The 36mm model does not come in Olive Green. Only the 34mm.

I don't think you will get discount on boutique ever. For discounts, you will need to go to ADs. And also, I would think level of discounts will depend on the brand you are looking for as well with buying Omega from AD can get you more discount than Rolex. I wasn't looking for Rolex so couldn't say much about that but Shums Jewellery in Chinatownn offered me 15% off Omega watch right out the bat. Not sure if you can push for higher but you can always try! ADs can always try order the watch in if they don't have what you want in stock. Make sure you agree on the price, inc discounts, if you decide to order in from the ADs. And also, congrats on your engagement. :)

    • Agreed regarding boutique discounts.

Thanks Mozz13! I just dropped by Shums in Chinatown and they offered me 15% too. Potential for more discount because I'm buying two watches. Additional discount available for cash instead of credit card payment.

There's a further reduction (8.7%?) as I will be leaving the country in the next couple of months as well!

      • There you go! Shums looks like a winner. Is that 8.7% for GST refund? Just take note that GST refund is only 60 days from purchase date so time it good. Either way keep us posted what you decided on.

        • Yep that was the GST refund I was referring to. Noted regarding 60 days. Too easy as all we need to do is drop a 20% deposit and pick it up anytime after.

Most likely going with OPs over Omegas, unless we can't get the specific colours we want.

  • Wait till your honeymoon, goto the usa, and you practically can buy them half the price.

You're talking out of your ass.

Some Rolex's are cheaper here than the USA. Some are cheaper over there but none are 'practically half price'.

      • Considering sourcing from Malaysia instead as there is no more GST thanks to the recent elections.

    what has this site become?

  • Do you ever worry about getting jumped for your expensive watch?

    • Haha i do, i just don't bring it out un-necessarily

  • If you want my honest opinion, buy it off amazon or have a friend visit from US.

I bought my Speedmaster for 2/3 of the price there.

I tried to sneak it past parcel customs but ended up paying $500 for it in the end.

Annoying because my brother was in the US at the time.

Last time i did research for a sub Rolexs are cheaper here with GST off in comparison to everywhere else i checked.

Don't forget to check out Second hand watches in Japan, they look after it and the second hand market is big there.

Issue is our dollar is crapola so it ends up being small savings.

Omega here don't offer great savings unfortunately, However, look out for second hands. Sometimes there are cracker deals.

I saw this speedmaster white racing that went for just over 3.5k (pretty much brand new, no scratches looked like unused to be honest, came with warranty too)

Beautiful watch but couldn't justify since i have one similar already.

If you want a rolex, I'd suggest europe and getting lucky or put your name on the waiting list.

The other option is to try your luck with un authorized sellers in the US.

They are very reliable just don't come with manufacturers warranty but never heard any complaints of the product only shipping / customer service.

  • Curious to know. What car do you rolex owners drive?

  • Melbourne Watch Company.

UPDATE: Finally got two OPs. 34MM for the missus and 41MM Datejust for myself. It was so hard trying to get Dark Rhodium and after waiting a couple of months I managed to source a Datejust in that colour. Got 5% but still pretty happy with it. Was very close to getting the Milgauss though, but no discount offered.

    • Which shop did you end up getting it from OP? I am thinking of getting a Submariner date (currently on list) and just wanted to double check if I could score a discount despite the waiting list.

@BMAKJ - Got my watches from Kennedys in the city. Unfortunately I'm not sure if you will be able to get any discounts because I was also contemplating the Explorer and Milgauss which are both professional series watches and was not offered any discounts.

Depending on the model/colour you are after, I am certain you would be able to source it from overseas if you are going to Asia. I just got back from Bangkok and there were quite a number of stainless steel pieces that I was chasing here in Sydney which were easily available over there. Both at the airport and shopping malls. Only issue is it might cost you slightly more.

    • Thanks for this info very useful - I didn’t know the boutique offered any discounts.

Just wanted to check if you knew if Shums had any availability in the Explorer when you were looking and if any discounts were on offer? Or are only the non-professional watches discounted?

  • @fallout - Shums is not a Rolex AD, only Omega? All of them are situated very close in the CBD, less than 5 mins walk between each outlet (Kennedys, JFP, and HourGlass). No discounts on professional series offered to me.

My advice is not to wait too long if you already know what you want. The Australian market is small compared to neighboring Asian countries so unless you're travelling overseas I wouldn't take the risk. Case in point, Explorer at Kennedy's was sold a week after I saw it.

  • Rolex AD I would go J FP next to David Jones on Castlereagh or Watches of Switzerland for the better experience , The bigger the store the less significant you are to them no matter about 5% ! You are paying top $$ for a watch and should be treated with the most respect and courtesy. Don't go to a store who can't hold on to the Auth Dealership of a brand products , it says something about the company. Do your research about the companies where you are going to buy and NEVER STAND IN LINE TO SPEND YOUR $$ !
SHUMS in Chinatown is the best place for Omega and Cartier …ask for Tony !
