Discounted Yearly Annual Fee + 25,000 Existing Points for Existing AmEx

Hey guys,

I recently called up to get a supplementary card for my Qantas American Express Discovery Card. While doing so, the operator offered to upgrade my card to the Qantas American Express Ultimate Card. The card has a $450 annual fee however, she said I would get a discount of $100 off the annual fee every year. I would also get 25,000 Qantas points if I spent $3000 in the next 3 months. Is this a good deal and has anyone else received this offer?.

Thanks.

Update: I have updated the card, no additional credit check required and it was approved the next day after the phone call.

  • If you value the qantas travel voucher that comes with the card - or can sell it off i would do it for sure. The 25k qantas points is only "worth" $250 if you were going to sell them off, but you can get a lot more value using them towards flights if you have a trip in mind soon. Getting 25k qantas points without having to apply for another card (and therefore getting another enquiry on your credit rating) is very good offer.

Just cancel after you get the 25k points and begin the 18month wait till you apply again.

  • +1

Every Amex rep I have talked to said they cannot discount annual fees. Guess that has either changed recently or I'm just a pushover

    • Maybe its only for this ultimate card

  • Does this require you to put in a new application? (Triggering a credit check on your file)

    • From memory no. I moved from an Amex Explorer, to the Platinum edge. No hit to Equifax. Thats pending of course you stay with the same limit.

Just checked for you, definitely did not hit my Equifax.
