A broker once told me if you walked away feeling like you are best mates with the salesman, you have been had.

  • I reckon you could get a Trendline at that price with a bit more haggling especially now with EOFY sales, they would like to push out as much as they can to meet targets

    Ok. What is your budget?

Are you paying cash? If not and getting financing get that from a separate finance company. Alphera. Not through the dealer. They will make extra money off you without you knowing with the final pricing.

The best way to tackle this is now to go to another dealer with a similar car.

Ring around the other dealers with the same specs you just had on this model. Check the model build date. You mentioned 2017. Later the month the better for resale if not a 2017 plated model. Say you want to do a deal today and will come in if I get a good price. You want them to put int their best price. You are not in the area, but you will go to the dealer to do the deal if the price is right. Drive away price with new car. Max 20km on the clock. Get them to confirm that on the phone. Get salespersons details. Put in specific requests if you want a specific colour or any extras, so you compare apples for apples.

The game begins. Do this for a few dealers near by. If you are willing to drive further out call those ones as well.

100% you will get a better price. Let us know how you go.

Then if your really keen once you have the lowest price. Go back to the original dealer assuming closer to where you live. See if they can match.Ask if they can throw in any extras like mats if it doesn't already have it.

Hope that helps. The salesmen is not your friend. He is a shark and you are the prey.

    • Hey Dedbny,

I have done mostly what you have suggested and that is how i landed with 23,700. Most dealers wont even go below 24,000. They just told me to go with the dealer who accepted 24k

      Thanks for sharing the advice!

If you can wait till stay that last Saturday on this month and go in at 4pm to do the deal you should still save a bit more. Still worth it for just being patient. On the other note I ditto Pete 2 comments. VW will burn you when you need things fixed. They have been going by Golfs old rep for to long. These cars are not that reliable. Good luck with your purchase and let us know how you go.

By the way. As soon as a dealer says this is the lowest price I can give you or any other dealer. You know that is bull Shite.

Dealer pulled that on me in the office. Worked on me for 1hr. Used that line and I said ok. Give me the phone. What for. I said so I can call up another dealer. Called my local dealer who I had actually been in previously and knew that this dealer were rivals for sales. Spoke to the salesmen at this other dealership and he did better again on price. Said great Ill be over shortly. Then told the salesmen I was off to the other dealer. He was pissed.

Push hard. They have more cars than buyers. Put yourself in the power position. Don't take crap. If they want to sell you the car especially at the EOFY time they'll do the sale even if they don't make much on it. Just to get sales numbers and the salesmen to keep his job to get the sale.

Dealer: so whats the best price that you will buy Golf from us today?
Punter: dunno mate, I am still reeling from all that fallout with VW lies about their emissions. I'm surprised you are still allowed to sell cars here TBH.
Dealer: (shuffles feet) well back to the Golf, doesn't it look great in Indium Grey. If you just let me know what you are willing to pay, I will take it to the manager.
Punter: Imodium Grey? Isn't that a diarrhoea medication or something? Dude, makes me feel sick. Where's the bathroom?

Immodium Grey. When you need to stop that car real good.

Sorry but I don't understand why anyone would buy a European car. They are made for Europe not for countries like OZ or the USA..

Top 7 selling vehicles in the USA 2017.

    Honda CR-V (377,895 sold) …
    Toyota Camry (387,081 sold) …
    Nissan Rogue (403,465 sold) …
    Toyota RAV4 (407,594 sold) …
    Ram Pickup (500,723 sold) …
    Chevrolet Silverado (585,864 sold) …
    Ford F-series (896,764 sold) …

    • Comparing the top selling vehicles in the US for last year dosent work. 4 of the cars listed there are either non existent here in AUS or are of different spec.

      If you were to go off a list of top selling vehicles here's the top 10 from 2017 for AUS;

      1. Toyota HiLux – 47,093
      2. Ford Ranger – 42,728
      3. Toyota Corolla – 37,353
      4. Mazda3 – 32,690
      5. Hyundai i30 – 28,780
      6. Mazda CX-5 – 25,831
      7. Hyundai Tucson – 23,828
      8. Holden Commodore – 23,676
      9. Toyota Camry – 23,620
      10. Mitsubishi Triton – 23,605

This being said I wouldn't recommend basing your new car purchase off a top 10 list.

"They are made for Europe not for countries like OZ or the USA."

I was making a comparison with the size of the USA, OZ and European countries.
