Front Door Locks

Hi All,

I'm thinking of installing a lockwood deadlatch as my only lock on the front door (new door), from a security point of view does this suffice.

I've noticed it quite common to have only 1 lock on a door, is a 2nd lock overkill?

Cheers

  • Depends what best gives you peace of mind, versus the time it'll take to unlock your door.

If you want an added layer of security for your front door, why not install a chain lock in addition?

This would only work when you're at home, but could give you an added layer of security at night when you're home.

  • 2 locks isn't overkill imo. I've usually had 3 - deadlock, lockable handle thingy, and a simple chain. I don't think I've really ever used the chain - I guess in case I'm hiding from an axe murderer?

The chain would probably be least effective against the axe.

Good point. What would you recommend against axe murderers? Budget around maybe $50.

          Bikies.

Get a sign made up that resembles a Bikie Group's patch; put it on the front door. Done.

Depends what sort of area you live in, how scared you are of break ins and how secure the rest of the windows and doors are.

We have a deadlock and normal handle latch on the front door, but rarely use the deadlock. If someone breaks in there are several other exits that are not deadlock, so there is little point having one on the front door.

Why not get a security screen door instead?

  • Locks only really keep out the honest people. If somebody wanted to break in, there'd be easier (though less efficient) ways. Typically, if your house is in a high-traffic area, they'd be looking for back yard access, as the rear door is likely: A) Less secure and B) They have more privacy.

They deter opportunists though. Why break into your house if the neighbours is easier?

  • Can never be too overkill.
