[AMA] I Work for One of The Two Big Supermarket Chains. Ask Me Anything!

Hi all,

I have worked in one of the two big chains (not saying which but its either Coles or Woolworths) for over 8 years now. I've worked in grocery/long life, dairy/freezer, customer service, meat and in fresh produce, so there's not much about the "behind the scenes" in supermarkets I don't know about :P

I'm currently studying at uni so I work part time atm.

AMA!

        • Refresh my memory… Which one is the millionaire and running a nation again - you, or him? ;-D

  • How to apply for a night filler job?

I have a day job but want some extra cash for rainy days.

    • +2

As before. "Apply online.. Don't bother handing in a resume."

  • How is the process to check for the safety and ethical standards of products imported from China and third-world countries?

    • +1

Definitely won't be a store job. But the importer. Pretty sure they are responsible.

    • +1

I have no idea who does that but it certainly isn't us.

  • Why is the Yakult always out of stock?

    • +8

      Your local store is uncultured.

    • It sells out quick.

    • Because there's more people living in your area that like curdled milk that smells like reflux.

  • Hi OP

I'm interested to know how they make money? Do they buy in bulk at a discount rate and resell the products or they charge a commission for the products that they sell?

Why there are some items be placed at the top and some at the bottom? Is it because the products on the top makes more margin? Who makes the decisions and why?

Do you guys have KPI for each positions/ stores? What happen if you can or cannot meet it?

    Thanks

    • They sell by volume.

Items are placed at the top/bottom to prevent damage if they do fall, also for OH&S (scenarios may differ for each). Whoever works in marketing/ stock management higher up do.

There are KPI's, but not the ones we're used to - generally only the managers worry about these. Unless you're suuuuuuuuper slow/incompetent at the registers, KPI's don't even enter anyone's mind. If you don't meet it, you're probably given the boot - but remember, it's not like EB Games.

      :P

Anyone in a filling job definitely has a KPI, if you don't meet it you don't get shifts.

Also service staff have a minimum scan rate.

  • Who pays for the 50% off deals? Are they still profitable for the supermarkets or loss leaders?

  • What happens to the "Expired" fresh produce and vegatables which are actually still good enough to eat?

    • Expired? Bin!

  • Up down, change the prices around
Keep you guessing week after week
Don't know if it'll be exy or cheap

  • How reliable is "Home Brand" compare to "Woolworths" or Woolworths "Macro"? I used to think they are cheap because they somewhat lower the quality of the product. But every now and then I'm still buying some of their stuffs (E.g. sugar or flour) Is this rumor or truth?

    • +1

I buy homebrand sugar, milk, eggs, oats, honey etc. all the time. It's basically the same as the branded ones.

Any facts to back up your statement?

        • +1

No but I've never noticed much of a difference.

  • What's the area of the store that you work for? Don't have to be too specific if you don't want, it's just that drug addict shoplifting story sounded straight out of western Sydney haha

  • How many staff are there in the office of your store? Not on the floor.

    • +1

Office? Not many. Just a payroll person. The boss & managers aren't in the office much.

    1. WHY do staff always stick price reduction labels smack over the top of a product name, so you have no idea what the heck the item is!?

    2. Why doesn't someone introduce deodorant, laundry powder, or nicotine patches to the shelf packers?

    3. Why do shelf packers swear like truck drivers as I walk by with my wife and children?

    4. Why is it always the lone fat girl stocking the chocolate section, and the 3 skinny stinky dorks from #2 & #3 restocking the softdrink section?

    • +1
      1. Some items eg. Small yoghurts have very little space to plop a sticker on, and you can't put the new price on the back so you have to cover part of the front. Otherwise perhaps the person doing markdowns was doing it really quickly and didn't have time to do it neatly.

      2. We've had that issue before and usually it's the Indians! We used to have an Aussie guy who stunk to high heaven too and our (then) boss only intervened when customers started complaining.
As for nicotine, I have no idea what it is with Coles employees and smoking but like 70% seem to do it. I'm with you on that one, the breath STINKS!

      3. When they're working out on the floor? They shouldn't, it's unprofessional.

      4. Thats not the case at our store. The skinny lady does the choccies and chips and the drinks are done by our fittest guys.

I do notice however that almost every store has a fat deli worker 🤔

  • So basically the answer to how to get a job at coles/woolies is just keep applying online? How many times did you apply via online?

    • Pretty much :( I applied years ago but got in on my first interview (which was just a group interview, no one on one). Before that I'd applied to a few stores with no luck.

    Worst AMA ever

    • Honey it's been like two weeks since I started this, and you posted at like 7.30am

What have I not answered to your satisfaction?

  • Can you tell me what "brand" or company name is printed on the boxes for those single use plastic bags?

What are they doing with the boxes of plastic bags left over? Can u get me one?
