As we are soon moving over to NBN :( I was thinking of buying Wi-Fi 4G modem and having a pre-paid SIM card as backup?
Any recommendations for internet backup options?

Cheapest option I've found for infrequent use is Vodafone long life prepaid with a few dollars credit, and just top up with data 'Add ons' when you need to. 2GB for $3 expires midnight the next day.
I used an Optus E5573 modem (unlocked by default) while waiting for our internet connection, it does the job but I wouldn't expect to stream reliably unless you have a very strong signal
Why don't you get nbn with wifi redundancy?
Speeds aren't great though, I believe voda and helstra provide this.
