Amazon Hard Drive Packaging

I have just bought two hard drives from Amazon - one US and one Aus. I am concerned about the packaging for both. The one from the US was an external HDD packaged in its box then a thin bubble-wrap lined bag. The second was an internal HDD packaged in its dust sleeve then in the bottom of a bigger box with some scrunched up paper on top.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?
Do you think that the lifespan of the drives may be affected?

Thank you

  • Do you think that the lifespan of the drives may be affected?

I doubt it because drives have been made to withstand high g-forces for many years. You can contact Amazon using their live chat, they usually fall over themselves to make customers happy so they'll probably take returns and credit you for shipping costs.

  • I've had some terrible packaging when it comes to Amazon. There's just a small scrunched up ball of paper to cushion the item which in most cases is never a tight fit and allows the product to slide around. You just have to hope the manufacturer protects their item well within the product box because Amazon will do the minimum on their end.

  • The drive mfr's box is designed to withstand normal shipping before reaching shops, etc. I don't think Amazon adding another layer will affect protection.

Yep, the R/W head is parked when it is powered off. Moving around a HDD while it is spinning and reading/writing is the issue.

      • Thanks. I didn't know that
