Tips for Purchasing a New Car before EOFY?

I'm in the market for a new car at the moment and wondering if it might be a good time for deals, leading into end of financial year.

At the moment, i'm considering an SUV - possibly Mazda, Mitsubishi or Jeep.

Are there any good offers going from those car makers at the moment? Regardless of offers, would I have more lucky just trying to negotiate a great price?

If it helps, i'm based in NSW, an hour out of Sydney.

  • a couple of years back, I looked up forums in whirlpool for the car I wanted (make and model). people there update a spreadsheet with the price, inclusions and location etc. When I bought my Mazda 3 then, I did see a few very good prices from Mazda Penrith.

Bargain hard is the mantra - get inclusions like mats, tinted windows, boot tray etc

I'd say shop around & look for new cars that have been sitting for a while (2017 models) that the dealers want to try & move.

For example, a new Pajero Sport GLX on Mitsubishi Special Deals is $44,490, but a quick look finds a new MY2017 model at Carsales for $39,990

    • Have your finance ready and start with a low ball offer
    • Wait till the last week of the month when dealers really want to get their numbers up
    • Don't bother with the rust and paint protection as they are really not needed for modern cars
    • Make sure the car you test drive is the same spec as the car you want to buy
    • Make sure you get mats and a full tank of petrol
    • Stay away from Jeep

One trick with rust and paint protection and tinting is to add them up front (so the dealer thinks they will make money on them and hopefully slim down the margin elsewhere) then drop them just before you agree to the final price.

      • Oh nice one.

Agree! I got that and it's rubbish IMO.

      • Tint your car externally.
      • Don't get their external 5 year warranty ~ usually by an external insurance company and covers very minimal (unless the manufacturer covers it like the standard 3 year) They will suck you in to service at the dealerships after the normal warranty expires and charge you like a wounded bull.
      • Don't get tyre protection warranty (if they still have it) IMO it's another scam

      Cheers

I second the jeep comment - they are a lottery … with equivalent odds on winning

    • thanks for the tips. I was going to ask why you said to stay away from Jeep… More curious than anything.

A couple of years ago, I was really keen on the Jeep Cherokee… After taking it for a drive though, I was kind of turned off - they felt so bulky to drive. So …I'm not really interested in a Jeep any more.

I don't think it's the cars themselves, it's the quality and customer service. Off the top of my head there were numbers published that showed 60+% of new Jeeps had some kind of problem requiring warranty repairs. Combine that with Jeep having to enter in to an undertaking with the ACCC to better their customer service policies and procedures… it's just not worth the risk.

I like the Cherokee, and my partner and I would seriously have given it consideration, but we're just not willing to play roulette with a new car.

        YMMV.
