Help needed about TRS

Hello everyone!

I just brought a Huawei P20 Pro from JB for $1010 today, and me and my wife are going to Japan in two weeks. I tried to look for the info on TRS online, but its really confusing.

My plan is to claim GST on P20 at the sydney airport, then bring it back to Australia from Japan. My questions are:
1. Is it doable? I know that people have to pay back GST if they are bring back more than $900 worth of good, the P20 is obviously more than that, however, I read somewhere says family can pool their allowance. If me and my wife are travelling together, can we pool our allowance together, so we don't have to pay GST back.
2.On the way back, do I need to tick on the entry card stating that I am bring more than $900 worth of good back to Australia? If I tick this, will border protection stop me and question me? What should I do if they stop me?

I am really ignorant on this kind of stuff as I have never claim GST before, and I don't intend to break any laws over 90 something bucks…

any help will be appreciated!

  • back more than $900 worth of good
    "me and my wife "

    times 2
    you got $1800 now

    • do i still need to tick on the entry card to declare that I am bring back more than $900 worth of good?

      Thanks!

      • +1

what is the value of a second hand Huawei P20 Pro?

      • Think of it this way. You're bringing back half the phone and your wife is bring back the other. So no.

  • I believe by ticking that "over $900" checkbox, it means you have to declare and pay for the extra tax.

Because your combined pool of allowance is increased to $1800 I don't think you'd need to - as you are permitted to bring the phone without paying any excise or duty.

    They are my guesses really.

Also I think some sort of depreciation can be applied ?

  • If I tick this, will border protection stop me and question me?

    Yup.

What should I do if they stop me?

Flush the drugs (not the phone), call a lawyer (use the P20 for this).

    • Thanks, Saul.

      • It would've been funnier, if I wrote "Flush the fruit" … Australian customs are real Nazi's about that sh*t.

        • I had a bottle of water that the officer poured in to a bucket while he stared DIRECTLY at me, not breaking eye contact. It was really really weird.

    1. Yes
    2. No
  • Yes you can easily claim the phone on the way out.

No you don't have to tick the $900 question because, even if you did and declared the full value of the phone, Customs would see you are travelling together and have a pooled allowance and wave you on. By ticking you you are only wasting your time being stopped.

  • Did this recently, don’t need to declare on the way in unless you purchase duty free “general goods” overseas that pushes you over the $1,800’couple limit.

General goods from memory does not include clothes, shoes and personal care items.

  • Do it this way. You should have yours or your wife's name on the invoice to claim TRS (if over $1000 if I am not wrong). If you have taken the phone on your name and claimed TRS, hand over the phone to your wife on the way back as you have surprised her and "gifted" it to her while on holiday. If the invoice is on your wife's name, then you will bring the phone in to the country.

This way, you don't even have the phone on you if at all they ask you.
