New Laptop - Budget $1400

Hey guys with EOFY coming I am looking to purchase a new laptop.

It will most be used for studying, browsing, editing/watching videos, maybe little gaming and working on some music so would prefer a fast responsive unit with a good battery life. SSD with Full HD or better display as well. 8Gb Ram minimum and a very good processor of course. Willing to spend up to $1400.

Which brands are good? Which models?

Currently I have seen a Dell inspiron 7000 laptop for $1150 - 50% off which intrigued me as it seems decent.
Thoughts please?

Thanks

  • I would wait for Dell XPS 15 model to come up on Dell Outlet website.

    • Are they all refurbished units or brand new too?

  • Have you had a look at Metabox laptops?

    • I have not but I will have a look now. Bargain site?

Tiny bit premium but very customizable and great after sales support.

  • What's your stance on second hand used items?

Been seeing a lot of GTX 1060 7700HQ 256gb SSD 8-16gb ram 15.6" Full HD laptops on gumtree around $1500 AUD might be able to haggle it down to near $1400 AUD.

    • Thanks but would prefer brand new with receipt and warranty etc.

      • All good just checking out your preferences and supplying options.

        • I have seen an Asus n580 vivobook laptop for $1497. GTX 1050 4GB graphics, i7 7th gen processor, 8 gb ram. Although it has hybrid storage with 128gb ssd+1tb hdd. Not sure how that works as I have never used Asus before

        • @ay-papii: for that price you can do much better.

1050Ti minimum and few hundred dollars better.

That is very near 1060 gpu price 7700k specs on a bargain sale.

        • @AlienC: okay as I started looking more in that price range I have found more that seem better.

What's your opinion for the Inspiron 15 7000 for $1150?

  • yeah , dell last gen 7000 around 1400 if 20% ebay

    7300hq
    gtx 1060

no point going for 8550u … with mx130

    • Thanks but here's the dumb question: what's 8500u and m130? Lol

      • +1

i7-8550u is 8th gen intel mobile cpu - very good & capable

        mx130 is new gen. crap gpu …. think geforce 920m / 940mx

        • Oh right thanks! I would definitely want either 8th or 7th gen i7

  • Thoughts on Lenovo Ideapad Laptop seen on Harvey Norman website…

Not getting your full money's worth for sure hard pass.

      Try this link

And some laptops close to your budget but with much better specs

These are all great bargains if you don't want to go the gumtree route and get near brand new slightly used for even much more cheaper.. I highly recommend gumtree route to save more money potentially.

If you want to save even more money get a 1050ti laptop can save easily a few hundred more and should still run stuff very well but the 1060 is obviously a lot more future proof because higher gpu performance.

      • The Lenovo Legion Y720 8gb ram one seems very tempting. Specs look good for the price.

I'm assuming the 1060 gpu is one of the best in the market now. Does it affect the battery much?

The 1050ti and 1060 laptops are the sweet spot for laptops imho.

They are the best for value in my opinion as the 1070 can be upwards of $600 extra minimum on this.. And a 1050 non ti is a lot cheaper but very basic and barebones and should only be bought if you need very basic basic gaming needs and media consumption.

Best I price I have seen for a 1070 laptop aka the next step up from a 1060 laptop was a $1700~ ish AUD refurb but this was now a long time ago funnily enough.

Since then maybe one or two $1900 ones.

Can sometimes get them for $2000 on sales from ebay.

Gpu only affects the battery in gaming and maybe outputting 4k content to an external display afaik as it is not used in normal tasks like office products, web browsing and emails.. YouTube might use a bit of it is too demanding for the cpu I think but I am half sure the 7700hq can handle 4k YouTube Netflix maybe but don't quote me on that.

The power consumption on the 1030 1050 1050ti and 1060 gpus are very very good. 1070 performance is where it starts to take a lot more power and then of course more for the highest mobile gpu the gtx 1080.

I would pony up for a 16gb ram model just for better future proofing and it will save you some headaches in the long run and better resale value if and when you plan to resell it but that's up to you, you can get by on 8 as long as you are not thinking about heavy multitasking or any kind of video and image editing.

Been planning to buy metabox laptop next week. I can recommend you get a metabox with gtx 1050ti i5 8th gen roughly around A$1,400
