Best Flight Option to Qualify for Credit Card Travel Insurance?

Hi all. I've booked flights using my ANZ black credit card, which will cover me with travel insurance so long as I have a return flight booked back to anywhere in Australia. The issue is that I don't know when I'll be back. I might be travelling for 1 month, 2 months or more depending on whether I can lock in internships and work experience.

I could book a cheap 'burner' flight far in the future that I don't end up using, but I'd rather book return to Melbourne and be able to change flight dates. Ultimately my question is: do any airlines offer relatively cheap date changes on tickets?

I was hoping someone in the ozbargain community would have already come across and optimised the solution to this!

Cheers

edit: First leg of trip is to Malaysia/Indonesia, and second leg MAY be in Europe.

When you look at the costs involved, it may be cheaper to simply buy a separate travel insurance.

  • Check your policy, but I'm pretty sure the ANZ insurance only requires that you spend $250 on flights, hotels etc. before you go. It doesn't require both flights be booked with the card.

edit: Actually re-read the policy. You do need some kind of return flight, it just doesn't have to be booked with the card.

    • Thanks for the reply. The ANZ card I'm using does require a return ticket. The issue I have with getting a separate travel insurance policy is that I have no idea how long my trip will actually be! It all depends on whether I can lock in internships/work exp.

From my brief attempt at spreadsheet calcs using Zoom, it seems like separate travel insurance is cheaper until the 2 week mark, after which it becomes cheaper to use the CC insurance (which is $65 [card fee] regardless of length of travel [I think, can someone clarify?***]).

***edit: seems as if the max trip length covered by the ANZ black travel insurance policy is 6 months, which is still amazing value given that a 6 month policy from Zoom TI is $424.
