Can You Interchange a Cartridge Oil Filter with a Spin-on Oil Filter?

Hi OzBargainers,

I'm going to start doing my own car services now and read that cars can have either a spin-on or cartridge filter.

I looked under my car and it looks like a cartridge one (https://imgur.com/a/aKo7UW3) Car is a 2015 Corolla ZRE182R

I've found suggestions that spin-on filters are better in terms of efficiency and cleanliness (and prices on eBay) so I was wondering if it's possible to remove the old cartridge filter and chuck on a spin-on one? I've googled the question but can't seem to find a definitive answer.

The Repco website says my car can take both, but the threads under the car in the image might suggest different.

Cheers

No, you need to use the cartridge filter and make sure you change the O rings.

This. Cartridge and spin on filters are not interchangeable.

There may be a retro fit kit available, but OP’s is a cartridge filter housing. I doubt you would just get a spin-on filter to even go on there with any success. The two mounting housings for cartridge and spin-on look completely different.

For adaptors, you could try Baxter Performance as they do adaptors for Toyota vehicles.

      • Those Baxter Performance adapters look the business!

Tempted to get one for my car…

        • Yeah. I work for an engineering company and we have CNC machines and I was thinking of making a couple of these for other projects.

We have used some of the Baxter remote mount filter adaptors before, but never a cartridge to spin on adaptor…

  • Dont know what the repco guy is on about. Dont forget that you'll need a special adapter tool to extract the cartridge. its around $10 from ebay, make sure its for corrolla not camry. you might need a breaker bar if this is your first time as dealerships tightens it really really tight, I hurt my wrist last time.

    • Their is an optional fit part, more so the parts guy gives you the right one, not an option to the customer of what they can fit.

  • I remember years ago they used to make a conversion for a mazda motor because the whole housing bolted to the motor was plastic and it would become brittle after a time and crack.

You may have to look at aftermarket, but you might be out of luck if the whole assembly doesn't unbolt from the motor like the mazda one did.
