Low-Power, Quality Computer PSU?

I'm building a NAS thanks to recent eBay specials and am struggling to find an appropriate PSU on special.

The build's projected to run at a maximum of 200W on PCCP, and probably idle around 40W-50W. Non-modular shouldn't be a problem, as my case should have plenty of working room.

I'm currently eyeing a Corsair CX450M unit that may go on special this weekend with the eBay Plus promo for ~$73, and will be picking up an extra SATA cable for the modular unit for $15 ($88 total). It would be great if someone knew of a better deal with equivalent quality, around the same wattage or less.

On a side note, if someone can find this cheaper including postage to Tasmania, I'd be appreciative.

  • My advice with the PSU is to never cheap out on them. It's one of those components that often fail, I've had to RMA a lot of them over the years
Having said that, I have no recommendations because unfortunately all brands are prone to failure or flat out don't work on arrival. Or you get coil whine which is awful.

  • +1

The CX450M is middling in terms of quality. For a NAS that is always on, I would consider a Tier 1 or 2 PSU like be quiet pure power 500w. Or even better, EVGA G2 550w which is one of the best brand and models you can get.

If you are looking at efficiency to run, you need to look at the rating of the PSU. Gold or Plat, rather than the actual wattage

    • Isn't there an efficiency curve where running at 70-80% of the actual supplied power is better than running at 40% or so?

Both of those I'd be paying double what I'm already looking at, and while I'd like to purchase higher, I simply don't have the budget to sink $150-$170 into a PSU.

      • According to this review the peak efficiency is around the 50% mark. That test is done with a 120V AC input. With a 240V input the efficiency should be a little bit higher in the middle of the curve.

      • The basic 80 Plus rating means that the PSU is rated for at least 80% efficiency at 20% load, 50% load, and 100% load.

The 80 Plus Bronze rating means that the PSU is rated for at least 82% efficiency at 20% load, 85% at 50% load, and 82% at 100% load.

The 80 Plus Silver rating means that the PSU is rated for at least 85% efficiency at 20% load, 88% at 50% load, and 85% at 100% load.

The 80 Plus Gold rating meas that the PSU is rated for at least 87% efficiency at 20% load, 90% at 50% load, and 87% at 100% load.

The 80 Plus Platinum(bet you didn't know there was a Platinum) rating means that the PSU is rated for at least 90% efficiency at 20% load, 92% at 50% load, and 89% at 100% load.

      • Look at this tier list. Try a Tier 1 400-450w psu.

    • Solid choice for NAS!

    • I reading over this post because I've just had one these fail. Everthing I read said these were great for a home server style set up. But 1yr in seems to be having problems. Should be all good as they have a 5yr warranty.

After PC is shut down, slept or restarted it wont power on. Completely dead, no mb lights. Pull cord from wall wait 10. Etc etc. Then the next day it will power on again.. so random. Maybe MB (not sure how to test a motherboard). But I'm wary of this Seasonic 360w again.

      • does the psu fan spins ?

maybe cheaper to get a test psu (either borrow from friends or get 10 bux gumtree crap psu that came with cheapo case )
