iOS VS Android mobile app development

As we know there are two major players in the market. One is iOS and another one is Android. What is the statistic between iOS and Android users all over the world?

I'll just leave a link to what I posted about something similar to your question here. Nice logo by the way.

i'm guessing there are many more android users in the world, simply because android is common in both low-end through to high-end devices and has a much larger market share. ios is aimed at high-end devices and has a small market share. how lucrative each is? who knows

  • Google is probably the better place to find this answer - unlikely to be a statistician using Ozbargain who studies this kind of thing. Per the website below at Q1 2018 85.9% of users globally were operating on Android and 14.1% on iOS. Not surprising given iPhones would be way too expensive for the average person in many countries.

i have an app that for a hardware product been on the market for 2 years

    ios downloads about 21k
    android 11k

  • pretty sure UWP is where its at

  • I use React Native so it's not too much extra effort to build for both. If you want a quality product, you might want to style each a little differently but you can still reuse a lot of your code between the two versions.

I don't do this but my understanding is that it's common to have a paid version on iOS and a ad-supported version on Android just because iOS users are more likely to be willing to pay for apps.

  • pantsparty has the raw stats right. All depends on what you're trying to develop though. I've worked with hundreds of organisations on their mobile and digital strategies. Most consumer facing apps are built iOS first, followed by Android. Generally its considered that iOS users have money (iPhones are very expensive in most places) and you can tap into that. Android is far more pervasive globally though.

Like dazweeja says, there are a lot of frameworks to build multi channel apps on (Ionic, React, Flutter to name a few). All depends on what you're trying to achieve and who your end target user groups is.

  • I see a lot of stuff I think I'd love to try but it's only on iOS, specially on Kickstarter, annoys me to no end. There are many many many times more Android users than iOS, I can only assume that iOS users are more willing to buy and spend many many many times more money on apps.

  • If you're wanting to know which language to study, definitely pick Java, objective C can only be used with iOS whereas Java is used in thousands of different ways and will get you employed as many different things not just as an android developer.

  • Why not both. Especially now with Kotlin since it is very similar to the Swift language. I would start with Android given that a developer license is a one off small fee and then dive into iOS once you're comfortable.
