Minecraft (the new "better together"/bedrock updated version of the game) is now on the Nintendo eshop and free for all owners of Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition. THIS IS NOT A PATCH APPLIED TO THE OLD VERSION OF MINECRAFT FOR NINTENDO SWITCH.

The new version of the game allows for cross play with Xbox, PC, and Phone/tablet versions of the game (Sony still not on board - see: Fortnite).

To download the game you will need to access the eshop from your device as there is no option to download from browser in Aus yet, so link is just directed to a Vooks article regarding the update.

EDIT: People seem annoyed as this may be deemed as "not a deal", however "Minecraft" (as it is now simply known) is a new title on the eshop that people would still pay for unless they owned the old version. It's confusing, but if this is technically not enough to be considered a bargain, feel free to move to forums

  An update to the game you already own is free? I mean, I get that it's adding some nice new functionality but is this really a deal?

    I don't know why it got edited but it is an entirely new game. It isn't a patch applied to the old version of the game, but a new game on the eshop. Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition still remains on your console, with "Minecraft" being its own title that allows crossplay

      It got edited, but is technically a new game rather than a patch. Two separate files. It replaces Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, but is not the same game. If you open Minecraft Nintendo Switch Edition you will not be able to play with XB1 or PC users.

        All good. I wasn’t really having a go at you. More so trying to say it’s still a postable info. I was thinking it was more of a dlc then an update

        are there actual changes made to the game or is it just Nintendo edition couldn’t cross platform and the new version can. Seems more like the way pc java version gave free copies of the windows 10 version. Though in this case if there is no actual gameplay change they could have just made it an update not two seperate games.

  I updated this and played this with my son, it was a bit weird hearing the Xbox achievement sound on my Switch, had to do a double take.

  This is just an updated version.

  On Xbox or PlayStation there may be other included things like trophies and achievements, but on Switch it really is just a revised version of the game, if you previously owned the game, congratulations, now you continue to own the game basically.

  I cant find this in eshop. I own the physical copy for switch. How do i get this?
