Get 9,000 Avios Points (via Iberia Airlines) for $46.68, or Up to 90,000 Avios for $500

130

Iberia (Spanish airline owned by the same company as British Airways) are offering members of their Iberia Plus frequent flyer program 9,000 Avios for every ticket booked between now and June 24.

The points needs to be used by December 1st.

These can be used for Qantas see previous here : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/319614

Send your avios to British Airways (fully exchangeable currency) and Book Qantas flights using Avios

The trick is to buy an exceedingly cheap ticket (you don't have to fly it) to avail of the bonus Avios (which are deposited into your account 10 days after purchase). For example, one way tickets from PMI to MAD are currently just 46.68 AUD

You can book a return trip as two one-ways and earn 9,000 Avios each time
You can book the cheapest Spanish domestic flights for 46.68 AUD and simply no-show – the bonus Avios seem to arrive 10 days after PURCHASING the ticket, not actually flying
You might be able to “Part Pay with Avios”, normally a poor deal, but in this case you might want to reduce the up-front cash cost of chasing some bonus Avios.

Don’t forget that you can earn cashback from TopCashback for booking on iberia.com.

  • It’s 25 pound not $25

  • So can i just book 10 cheap tickets on the same flight and get 90k points?

  • Do you have a link for terms and conditions? I wonder if there is any restriction on fare class. Basic fares starts from €28one way. I imagine you are looking at google flights and that’s what showing you $25 aud.

  • Did you check fare conditions? Very rare that no-show has no fee on cheaper fares…

Edit: Tax may be refundable if you no-show… But it can be an annoying process. Apparently some businesses offer services for this quite cheap. Saves around £5/flight.

  • A more in-depth look at this 'gamble'. Personally won't be trying this, but good luck to those that are giving it a go!

  • Seems like a steal, but i want to make sure that they donnt charge for no show, otherwise its useless

  • Also please update

Hello everyone, however is following this thread. I have taken the bullet and booked 10 flights. I will keep you all posted with the outcome.

    • Which flight did you book? I think it’s a great buy at that price.

      • PMI-MAD. You have other options too. Like MAD-TLS if you want a trip to France. They all roughly $46 Aud.

        • PMI-MAD was selling for 20USD which works out cheaper. But seems most people got it already.

        • @nightelves: it May have been prior to 22nd June. Google flights at times hold historical data and is not always accurate at the time of booking.

          @nzthunderboy:

Oh dear this was taken from Loyaltylobby: The promotion is available when the tickets are bought on iberia.com in the following countries: Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Russia, United Kingdom, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Mexico and USA, regardless of the origin of the flight.

        • @nightelves: whaaaaaaaaat… “Amex, we have a problem”
Edit: just checked all my tickets and they all have - place of issue: Spain
So I hope 🤞 (cross fingers)

        • @nzthunderboy:

You’re right! I just did a few bookings as well.

        • @nzthunderboy: Have you received the avios yet?

Is this flight going to be ozbargained - fully purchased but empty when its time to take off!

  • I was considering booking some flights but saw several folks asking on the Iberia facebook page if the Avios can be transferred to British Airways
It seems their answer (at least on facebook) is "Hi, unfortunately the promotional Avios cannot be transfered"
    https://www.facebook.com/iberia

    • Saw that as well but there’s still good redemption had on this using iberia.

      • BA has better stock levels and availability. Also dealing with Iberia website at the time of redemption is a pain.

  • I read online you need to use the redemption by December 2018 on Iberia or you loose them, plus if you transfer them to say BA and don’t used them by December you Iberia account will have a negative balance, still not a bad deal, but beware of those points.

  • How did you guys make an account? Says passport is incorrect on multiple people.

    • Nvm, got it to work by setting to local identity instead of passport

Any ideas what redemptions we can do as AUs siders with these points? Seems like to make use of them we'd have to be already travelling to another faraway destination like US or Europe and want to go onwards from there.

      • Transfer to BA. then you will have few options. See the link in OPs post. Lots of discussion about the redemption opportunities.

        • Ok, just confirmed, Avios are not transferable to BA executive club.

        • @nzthunderboy:

          Thanks, got my points

  • Have anyone gotten their avios yet? Booked on 23rd with existing account nada

  • Did anyone get the avios?

    • Got mine!

  • Got mine to and made my first booking melbourne- Brisbane return 17000 Avios + 40 euros taxes (economy). Apparently Iberia has an agreement with Oneworld that only allows them to book return fares.
