Baby Product Distributor (grey market/parallel imported) - What do you think?

I am in the market for a baby stroller and came across this guy who claims to be a distributor of named baby strollers, cots, high chairs, car seats etc.

He gave me a brief rundown of the brand he carries like icandy, bugaboo, joolz, Silver Cross, Stokke and it look like a pretty good deal where some are around 30%+ off the RRP when I compare the price at babybunting.

I believe his products would most likely be grey market/parallel imported to be able to achieve these kinda of discounts but he claims that most warranty can be registered online, is that true? I thought the manufacturer would require a proof of purchase?

What are your thoughts of a parallel imported stroller? Thanks!

  • I wouldn’t have a problem if the warranty could be registered. I’d just be a bit skeptical if he was only offering 30% off the RRP. Baby Bunting is running 20% off all prams this weekend and for the peace of mind, warranty and the ability to pay by card, id just take the 10% difference.

  • Unfortunately, the pram I am after if excluded from this promo. I would have got it from babybunting otherwise.

  • How did you come across him? I only ask because a friend of mine told me about a similar person and later on we found out that person was stealing their stock and that is why the could offer a discount.

    • OMG! I came across his ad on gumtree as he advertised the products as band new in box; based in NSW Burwood.

The problem would arise if you purchased a counterfeit product, which is notoriously common in China. Poor workmanship and subpar materials hidden by a surface image meant to look like to the original.

The manufacturer would actually have details of the distributor in Australia, and distributors will have their import license and product registration details, if in fact they are legitimate distributors.

I know it's kinda troublesome to chase down this type of proof for a consumer product, but since it is for a baby, I personally wouldn't risk my child using a faulty or counterfeit product for safety concerns. But if 30% savings is important to you, go that extra mile to find out.

I don't generally dont mind greys import products even without warranty, but like I said, child safety issue here and that would be my primary concern.

So a call to their customer service to check the stock list (who stocks their product), and from there you will also be able to ask regarding warranty.

    • Thanks, Sofie. Will prob do more research into it before I commit to the purchase.
