$2 Sydney Thunder Membership with Access to Sydney Sydney Royal Easter Show Followup

So, a tonne of us probably got this tasty nugget tonight in our emails:

'Thank you for supporting the Thunder Nation and choosing to have your membership automatically renewed for the upcoming season. Your payment will be taken on 9 July using your previously nominated card.

If you purchased the $2 Membership offer earlier this year, you are receiving this email as terms of the offer stated. Members would be rolled into the equivalent BBL|08 Membership, a supporter Membership. To view the price of your membership click here.

Should you have any queries please do not hesitate in contacting our membership team on on 8302 6092 or email us here.'

Surely this breaches fair trading or ACCC guidelines with zero opt-out? it's nearly impossible to find the membership area on their site; here: https://www.sydneythunder.com.au/membership/dashboard

Jokes on them obvs cancelled card straight away. When signing up there was zero mention of this.

  • Changed my payment card to a fake credit card I found off a cc generator website.

Might not work cause 'using your previously nominated card'

  • +1

I used a card that was about to expire. I wonder if they will chase for payment?

  • +1

Also their website seems to be playing up. I logged in and I was able to see some J H***ley's personal information and address. Given that we can't delete the account, I would suggest editing your personal info and put fake details in.

  • +1

Luckily for me I also have a new card number with the old one cancelled.

  • Why don't you just cancel your membership? The offer was clear it would otherwise roll into full price membership.

    • +1

I tried cancelling and was told that I needed to send a request via email citing extenuating circumstances which would then be considered by the manager.

    • Its not that simple, and its not as if the membership provides much benefit anyway

    • They literally ignored people opting out ot auto renew

  • What are the chances next Easter show entry will be free?

    • +1

Unlikely, but theres always offers around. Its not as if they would have lost money anyway. Exhibitors get free tickets and as the days go on people get slack. This is a simple cash grab.

      • See that to me was the whole point of continuing membership. I'd be willing to let it slide if you get free easter show entry for next year.

        Thanks OP for this.

  • Has anyone had a response from the Sydney Thunder by email about this? I sent them an email but never heard anything back.

    • Emailed 8 hours ago. Nothing yet.

      • Not surprised. I believe this technically breaches ACL/Fair Trading laws re the opt out clause but I can't see them pursuing people for not paying membership fees, let alone hire a salesperson to call everyone and convince them to renew and update their CC details…

  • Just got this response from the Sydney Thunder:

Please note the deal was not put on Oz bargain by the Sydney Thunder. The attached was the email we sent to fans & Members and the below were the T&Cs associated with the membership.

Prior to cancelling I need to advise the below. This coming season will see supporter Members gain access to the Easter Show & Sydney International Tennis – all for only $30 for adults & $25 for juniors

    $2 Supporter Membership Promotion

Any and all Members who sign up for the $2 Supporter Membership Promotion will be opted into the Sydney Thunder Auto Renewal Payment Process. This will ensure that all Members will roll into the equivalent Membership for BBL08; prices are subject to change from BBL07 to BBL08. All Members who sign up for the $2 Membership will receive a Sydney Thunder Supporter Members pack. ONLY under extreme or explicit circumstances will a refund or cancellation of the auto roll-over be granted, after being reviewed by Sydney Thunder management. Any Members who wish to do so; must email [email protected] stating their valid reasons or needs to terminate the Membership with the Sydney Thunder.

We hope you see as much value in the Membership for the upcoming season as we do and we can keep you as Members.

I replied saying that I'd like to cancel my membership and got a response saying they'd make a one off exception.

  • When the deal was first posted on OB, someone did comment that you could indeed opt out of auto renewal ("vanleeuwen on 28/02/2018 - 12:31 - just untick auto renew at checkout).

I did untick the auto renew option but they still tried to get me to auto rollover to a new membership. Fortunately, it was with an old CC and I was not charged for this renewal.

The original deal was to get more traction in the market, but when they behave like this it will have the exact opposite impact on the public. Dodgy operators.

  • Got an email today (I think I changed cc# in profile to a stripe test cc#) ->

    YOUR BIG BASH MEMBERSHIP!

As you will be aware you have opted in to roll over your Sydney Thunder membership for the upcoming season.

Unfortunately due to a technical issue we were unable to take a payment from your nominated card yesterday. The issue is currently being worked on and we envision that we will be able to take payment from you within the next 24 to 48-hours.

Once your membership is renewed you will receive a confirmation email from us. Should we be unable to take payment during this period we will once again be in touch, but if you have any queries please do not hesitate in contacting our membership team on 8302 6092 or email us here.

Once again apologies for the inconvenience caused, we appreciate your support.

    Go Thunder!

Got the same email. Told them to not bother and cancel membership.

  • As far as deals go, I dunno, if you just go to the Easter show its not a very good deal esp as its not say $30 membership for a family. Easter show really should be free anyway stupid that it isn't

  • I deleted my credit card details on their account page and they still manage to deduct $30 from my account.

Is it possible to get a chargeback and how to do as I have never done it before?

    • From your bank, yeah, but they did say 'using your previously nominated account'…
