Can You Suggest Where to Buy Garden Soil Mix in Melbourne Eastern Suburbs?

We have been trying to grow veggies in containers & raised garden beds but soil mix from Bunnings are expensive (in bags) and the result was mediocre. Been adding good slow release, compost etc.

There are so many options from local or online nurseries but I'd like to get some reviews. If you had a good crop, please share your experience.

Melbourne Eastern suburbs please.

Do you compost your green waste? This is a good way to get quality soil mix, depending on how soon you need it.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. I will try to compost some grass clippings and dry leaves next.

Also fruit and veg peel, wasted foods, etc. We eat a lot of whole plant foods so have a lot of these going into our compost each day.

If you live near the beach, make some of your own liquid fertilizer for nothing but your time.
This combined with your own home made compost and soil will grow you a phat "crop"

Have you tried to call your local landscape/garden center/Sand-Soil place. They deliver by the tonne.

I initially had a local landscaping supplies deliver the soil, mulch and compost to redo our backyard (Back to Eden style).

Now I rely on Vermicompost to add to the soil over time. Every tray would have some hitch-hiking worms which I just add to the garden beds. So worm population in garden bed and garden in general have been abundant! If you are in the market for vermicomposting, go straight to the "Hungry Bin" you wont regret it.

    • I'd like to know which store people recommend before calling. Thanks for the tips about composting.

    How much do you need?

Daico's discount nursery have good bags of premium mix, they come in a pink bag - and serve us well.

But if you need it in bulk - look at the bulk garden places where you can get bark and pebbles etc. usually come in Cubic Metres though :D

    • 1 cubic m maximum tannyboy. I will have a look on their website. Thanks
