Bill Pay Considered Purchase or Cash Advance?

Hi,

I recently received my Woolworths Card and they have a nice facility to pay bills (BPAY) using the card through their website and the app.

Now I've always been paying my other card payments and even my rent via BPAY so I inquired them to confirm if those are considered regular "purchases" or "cash advance"?

Although they say its considered purchase as long as there's a biller code, but I doubt it because if I can pay my other card "bills" via this card then its obviously not a purchase. Has anyone tried this before?

Usually bpay from a credit card to pay off another credit card will be blocked. When you try to do it, there should be an error.

  • You will see that the biller codes they give you to pay your credit card, don't accept credit card.

Eg my Coles Mastercard is 8862. Cheque, savings or debit only.

There is a way to check this.

    • Goto Bpay website, and click biller finder.
    • Type in the biller code from the bill you want to pay.
    • In details, check for payment options.
      • if it says Cheque, Savings or Debit Card, any payments you make will usually attract a cash advance fee.
      • If it says Cheque, Savings or Debit Card, Visa Credit Card, MasterCard Credit Card, Other Credit Cards then it's a purchase.

    • Gotcha! Thanks. :)

  • If it works you will get slugged with a cash advance fee.
