How to Register a Domain Name?

How do you register a domain name and does any one have any recommendations for companies who can assist?

Comments

  • Registering is fairly easy, if you are after a .com or similar address almost anyone can register one for fairly cheaply, if you want a .com.au you will need to have an ABC/ACN with the name corresponding with the business name (e.g. Bills Widgets can buy billswidgets.com.au)

Doesn't need to be corresponding name, just requires ABN.

You would want to use a provider like Godaddy. Once you have registered you will need to purchase email and website hosting if you want to use them.

Stay away from crazyhost they are cheap for a reason.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

For the love of Christ do not use Godaddy.

Well unless you want your naive arse informed that you need a whole bunch of stuff that you do not need and you like losing money.

Godaddy is probably the single worst choice that someone who knows nothing about registering a domain could go to.

        Crazyhost are worse

        • The name should've been a tip-off.

I use godaddy with no issues. Just said no to all the extra stuff they try to sell you. I use Heroku to host my apps and godaddy for the domain name.

        • Never had a problem with GoDaddy either and I have registered my domain name with them for a good number of years. Never had them sell me anything else. The price seems reasonable. I managed to get <my surname>.net so I can direct all my mail to my yahoo account using e.g Food@<my surname>.net. I can filter the mail to various email accounts as well.

        • I've used godaddy for nearly 10 years. The only downside is the free included email is shit, which they admit.

      • Whats wrong with Go Daddy?
I've had several domains registered with them and have never had an issue.
They are fast to respond to inquiries and are really fast at propagating new DNS's.

just go with crazydomains/cheapdomains I have been using them for 10 years or so

  • Personally use Namesilo, their control panel leaves a little to be desired but everything works as it should. Plus free option to hide your personal details if that's something that concerns you.

If you are wanting to register a .au domain, your timing is impeciable.
I use Netregistry however we will switch over to Ventraip when the registration will fall due for renewal.

Below is the email I recieved from VentraIP in relation to the changes:

I’m writing this email to notify you of upcoming changes that will affect the way you register, renew, and manage your Australian country code top-level domains (ccTLDs), such as .COM.AU, .ORG.AU, etc.
Please take the time to read this email carefully and note some of the changes coming into effect on July 01, 2018.
    A New Registry Operator
After more than a decade, AusRegistry will no longer be responsible for the .AU online space. Instead, Afilias will be taking over from July 01, 2018.
    Updated Registration Periods
Multi-year registrations will be made available for all Australian ccTLDs, allowing you to register or renew any domain name that ends in ‘.AU’ for your choice of 1-5 years.
    New Domain Name Pricing
I’m happy to announce that VentraIP Australia will be dropping the price of all Australian ccTLDs once the transition to Afilias is complete.
From the 1st of July, 2018, all Australian ccTLDs will cost just $11.25 per year for any registration or renewal of up to 5 years when processed through VentraIP Australia!

VentraIP for domain. Netorigin for webhost.

I can't recall now "why", but there was corroboration at having them handled separately at the time.

I've had nothing but good experiences with both of them.

    Cheers

  • I was told to use webcity…
