Upgrade to legit Win10 on Dell Optiplex 9010

Scored a used 9010 that came with win7 reinstallation cd + dell 9010 drivers CD.
There's win7 pro COA sticker on the casing and still running win7 that i can't login.

1) Is win10 recommended ?
i suppose dell has complete drivers for win10 (http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/pr…)

2) What's the best way from here to get to legit win10 upgrade ? did i miss anything on below ? Or is there a better way
- load win7 reinstallation cd
- press f12 to boot from cd
- install/activate win7

then what? it seems MS has plugged the assistive loophole
https://www.techradar.com/au/news/windows-10-free-upgrade-is…

while this site below says exe assistive avail hidden for download at MS which stills works for win10 upgrade, but i couldn't find it.

Anyone know a better way ? Thanks

I can't answer your first question. But if you want windows 10, then just reinstall windows 7 from the disk. Activate and then download windows 10 iso. Mount it and upgrade. It will detect your windows 7 activation and permanently activate windows 10. After that you can create windows 10 disk from the iso and reinstall directly anytime you need. It still works.
Source: I did the same thing on my second hand Dell system that I got 2 months back

    • Thanks! mind to share the link to clean copy of win10 iso ?

    • whats this based on? You'll only get 10 activated if you have a licence in the system or your machine was part of the free licence upgrades. Its not blanket.

        "whats this based on?"=>
Please check my message again. I mention the source in the last line. I did it 2 months ago and it works

"You'll only get 10 activated if you have a licence in the system"=>
Thats exactly what I said. Re-install windows 7 from the recovery disk and ACTIVATE it using the key from COA sticker. If I remember correctly, OP will have to use phone activation and it will activate windows 7. Then after activation, he can upgrade to windows 10 which will automatically activate.

Basically, microsoft has stopped pushing free upgrades, but their activation servers still activate windows 10 on genuinly activated windows 7.

Once again, "whats this based on?"=> Experience

        • Or if that's too much effort download Windows 10 directly from microsoft's website (its free).
You need to pay money for the Activation Key, especially for the Pro version. However, it will still work without it but you will have an annoying watermark on your desktop background.

You can buy grey-market OEM keys from eBay for like $10 or so, if you like.

        • Yeah JSB, it doesn't work like that. Your machine must have either already had windows 10 on it at one stage or was part of a dell upgrade program that gave you a free Windows 10.

I can tell you from EXPERIENCE that any genuinely activated windows 7 doesn't get a 'free' upgrade.

          source = Experience

        • @JimmyF:

:) Jimmy, I got my desktop from my office when they decided to give them away because of planned upgrade for all employees.

It never had windows 10. I know it because it was my system that I was using in office.

I did the upgrade process after seeing and following https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-…

which worked for me. Maybe, I was just lucky.

          Please also check, https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/solved-windows-10-u…

where others are also confirming it working. Atleast, It was working till March end. Don't know the current state.

        • @jsb: and there is the answer then…. You used the upgrade loophole to get a license.

This isn't what you said in your first post. You left the key piece out.

If I were you I would just torrent it. Otherwise, try find a key on eBay for cheap.

    • Pretty sure the eBay sellers aren't legit

  • I would recommend downloading the ISO from Microsoft directly.
You go on this link via chrome's user agent switcher (set it to safari)
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

Then you should buy a cheap Windows 10 key from eBay.

This is what I did and my windows is still working fine.

    • “Then you should buy a cheap Windows 10 key from eBay”

Win7 pro code from COA sticker should work, no need to buy dodgy keys from eBay. Did this myself last week on a HP workstation.

  • Thought the free Win10 upgrades ended?
I've been using the Assistive Technologies loophole, but if you can do it the normal way then 1- upgrade to win10, 2- format and fresh install win10 (serial key will be saved in your bios)

  • You can also try to byoass Win7 logon. If successful you can play around with the existing installation first before deciding what to do. https://m.wikihow.com/Bypass-Windows-7-Password

    • i'm able to logon to win7 as user with admin rights , but not as the system administrator

the login is under workgroup/domain , how do i remove them or create separate local user login

Does this help? Remove the computer from the domain and set it to use a workgroup. Workgroup is the default configuration for a standalone Windows client machine. Any workgroup name will do and you can match the one used by your other Windows computers.
