Amazon's Description:

Was there a beginning of time? Could time run backwards? Is the universe infinite or does it have boundaries?

These are just some of the questions considered in the internationally acclaimed masterpiece by the world renowned physicist - generally considered to have been one of the world's greatest thinkers. It begins by reviewing the great theories of the cosmos from Newton to Einstein, before delving into the secrets which still lie at the heart of space and time, from the Big Bang to black holes, via spiral galaxies and strong theory. To this day A Brief History of Time remains a staple of the scientific canon, and its succinct and clear language continues to introduce millions to the universe and its wonders.

This new edition includes recent updates from Stephen Hawking with his latest thoughts about the No Boundary Proposal and offers new information about dark energy, the information paradox, eternal inflation, the microwave background radiation observations, and the discovery of gravitational waves.

It was published in tandem with the app, Stephen Hawking's Pocket Universe.

  • Nice.. 👍
    Thanks OP

  • Has it just gone down in price or was it just released?

    • It's a fairly old title and I believe he thought some of it's ideas are no longer applicable in later years as science moved along.

    • Depends on what you call recent. The original hard cover was released 1 March 1988. I have a copy on my bookshelf.

Last time I read it I was in highschool so wouldn't be the worst thing to re-read. But yes some of it is dated. We didn't even discover the expansion of the universe was expanding until 1998.

  • Cheaper on Amazon US due to conversion US$2.99=AU$4.04. Quick before you're blocked…

    I'm waiting for the sequel.

I have the hard copy. I can't get past the 3rd chapter. I keep re-reading the same page cause i really dont understand the concept.

I am an idiot though. Maybe if someone reads it for me i can plow through it.

      Audible…

I hope the computer voice sounds like Hawkings

    • I got this on the Audible trial choice. It’s still very complex for a simpleton like myself but it does help.

Skip that Chapter like a real Scientist.

    • I am a bit the same. First half of the book opens my mind… Second half confuses me.

Only thing is every library in the world would havr a copy, but you might need to borrow it a couple if times to get all the concepts according to above comments

  • The problem is that you cannot fully explain or understand the subject matter without a lot of advanced maths.
Its like explaining painting to a blind person.

You are limited to analogies like "what is south of the south pole".
But it still makes for a very good read, even if you need to read parts two or three times.

  • Can't find the time to read it.

  • OK,Professor Hawking was a genius,so how does this information help save planet earth?…It's science fiction in the true sense.

    • What do you mean by save planet earth? Sure; she may be having a mid-life, but she's doing pretty well if you ask the other planets.
(don't ask Pluto - seriously, don't go there my friend)

  • Maybe I've become accustomed to free eBooks from OzBargain, but how is this a bargain? Is the price significantly different from before? Can't seem to see anything in OP's post.

just work for the Vinnies or likes until someone brings in the paperback

      • I never mentioned paperbacks? I'm asking where the bargain is.

        • I agree and I expect a signature from Stephen Hawking in each one!

    • Booko suggests that this title previously averaged $11-$13, hence current price is a bargain.
