Self-Serve Scoop & Bag (nuts, snacks, chocolates, etc.)

What is your opinion on the self-serve snack things where the customer has to scoop and bag the item? Do you use them?

I often see them containing very yummy things that I would love to buy but I cannot bring myself to use them knowing how many people will have breathed on my food and how many kids will have stuck their hands in the bucket.
I wonder how many vile humans have been to the toilet and handled that scoop without washing their hands in-between…

They're at a lot of places though, so I assume most people don't care.

    They're great for sampling.

      Did you misspell "stealing"?

He probably put himself on the scale before and after the "sampling". and pay the difference.

Most people I see that use them just use them as an all you can eat snack station. They walk up, grab a handful, walk off and continue shopping while stuffing their gobs.

From my observations, the scoops would be the cleanest things to touch, since no one else seems to touch them. :D

Fruit and veg is on display with people breathing on them and potentially touching them then putting them back.

You can wash fruit and veg. Have fun washing those flavoured rice puffs.

      • Do you wash all fruit and veg? I never wash mushrooms, for example.

        • So you leave/eat the small clumps of dirt on them?

@John Kimble: I brush it off but I can’t say I’ve ever rinsed mushrooms in water.

Even so, with other veggies I only use cold water to rinse them so it’s not like all the bacteria is killed anyway.

I don't use them because they are expensive

Yep the OP seems super concerned about hygenie but far more concerning is the $20+ per kg pricing to me.

There’s plenty of unhygienic things around our everyday, a scoop of snacks isn’t really that much of an extra risk imo.

Staff breath on your food when eating out. Most cafes/restaurants these days would fail health and safety regs.

    Better the devil you know

  • I think most of the one I've used are covered completely and can only be accessed by the scoop

While you're at it, better keep away from the bread and meat because I'm fairly certain the bakers and butchers don't hold their breath while doing their thing!

  • If you ever go to take a free sample from people handing out , eg samples from supermarket, free donut in the city etc, those are the worst because the people have been talking all over it all day.

I still go for it anyway, coz free donut :D

They don't bother me. I don't use them because they're generally more expensive.
