Basic PC required - Media and Age of Empires on Steam

Hey guys,

I've been using a Macbook Pro for about 10 years now so am completely out of touch. I have been getting nostalgic pangs to play some Age of Empires and was surprised to see it on Steam.

I have been thinking of setting up a desktop computer for some time anyway, so thought now would be a good time.

I'm after a reliable desktop that I can add 4-6tb of storage to with enough power to run AOE on Steam without lag.

I am not interested in any other games or intensive use, it will be used as a workstation to manage my online store and to serve files to my Chromecast.

Any recommendations for a cheap, reliable computer?

  • What's your budget?

  • +3

You can run AOE on a toaster

    • +1

When I game on mine, it overheats.

      • Are we talking Kenwood, Delonghi..?

        • It must be a Russel Hobbs if it screws up so readily.

  • Bargain basement budget build would be:

    • Dell Optiplex 9010 SFF i5 3570 3.4GHz, 8GB RAM

    • Gigabyte GeForce GTX1050Ti OC 4GB Low Profile.

Should be able to find a good deal in the new eBay 20% off sale, for $400 ish all up.

    • Get this and add your hard drive of choice. Done.

Aim for $20-25 AUD a terabyte for best price. $30/TB is also still ok.
