Starting a Bargain Site DiscountDeals.com.au

Hi guys I'm new to these forums, I've just soft-launched my new deals website. I'm keen to get feedback on the site - http://discountdeals.com.au but also get some ideas from people on products to sell. I'm not keen to just sell cheap end of the line stuff, I want to sell things that people want to buy - perhaps even seasonal stuff as an example.

I'm keen for any feedback so don't hold back - ha.

  • There's yellow….and there's YELLOW!!!!!

    Yours is a bit YELLOW!!!

  • You don't like yellow? ha

    • it certainly wakes you up :)

  • I like the layout, very clean and professional. I was thinking of doing the same thing recently too, but too bad i lack IT knowledge. In my opinion the site has a lot of potential (:

  • Maybe is a little bit bright, but seems like a pretty good site. Good Luck.

  • Good site and pretty good prices.

But the helicopter is only a reasonable price because of the free delivery.

It might be worth focusing on smaller products so you can give people better bargains.

  • ok it's painfully yellow. Might wanna go a bit lighter or dull maybe.

  • +1

What is wrong with the background being yellow? Seems OK. Just more whinging going on.

  • softer and lighter yellow please… my eyes hurt… and a few more products for sale please… otherwise I will just look at other sites that offer things for sale

    • +1
Don't understand why u get -ve.. .My eyes hurt too for real. Then again, I can't stand under the bright sun either.. :-)

Seems of though people have missed a freebie:
    "iPhone 4 Clear Screen Protector" 96 left $ 0 Free delivery Australia-wide.

Lets hope the knockers from above don't apply for a freebie. I wont be as its Apple related.

  • Hi guys thanks for the comments, I'll think about the yellow ha, Samfish5986 yeah you are right re the helicopter, I wanted to keep it really simple for people but once you add all of the costs in some of the bigger items don't come out that cheap. But at the same time I don't just want to sell iphone accessories so I was just planning on seeing how it goes.

  • Also, when your ready to get promoted, put some stupidly cheap items (like your free iphone protector) up on ozbargain, and anywhere else you can find.

Also keep in mind that you need to offer products that dealextreme don't sell.

    • thx for the tip re ozbargain, because I'm new I can't put this one on there today but I'll put it up tomorrow if there are any left and I'll keep it in mind for the future.

      • I can post them up in a few places I frequent, but are you sure you want a million people at your site at the moment?

For example if you offer the freebie, gain all the visitors, then you have a major problem soon after, the visitors won't stay away for long and delete you from their favorites.

I guess you would need lots of products lined up too.

        • Hi mate for sure, thanks for the offer. I'm just keen to get people to the site at the moment and see what kind of response I get, thanks again.

  • i likey
    but yellow is brightish

  • looks good. though we could probably really only tell when you put up all your deals and how that will look like (eg. if its too cluttered, or layed out well etc.)

As you know, there is a LOT of deals out there (one day deals, group buy deals etc). So it would be good to see how you handle that - for eg. dealdump, allthedeals etc. all do it their own way.

keep up the good work tho

P.S - i dont mind the yellow. I think colour is a personal preference - but maybe lighten it up if you're receiving so much feedback about it specifically.

  • crisp, clean, free item w/free shipping to boot, and lots of yellow. what's not to like?! good luck.

  • Looks good! Like all the social integration (disqus, uservoice etc)

Is the plan to just offer 4 deals or will you be expanding the offering?

Will you be running daily deal offers? If so we'd be happy to list them on our site :-)

    • Hi thanks for your comments. I wasn't planning on doing daily deals as such I don't think I have enough personpower to support that. I will do free days from time to time though so if that is the sort of thing you would put up then that would be cool? What is the best way to notify you for that sort of thing? Cool site BTW

      • Thanks DTM .. All the deals we list are time limited, changing every 24hr in the daily section or up to 168 hrs in the weekly section. If you think you'll be changing them that often just send us a PM on Ozbargain and we'll get you listed

        • HI ATD, using this account from now on so people don't think I'm being dodgy, ha. Anyway the deals aren't time limited, they are only limited by stock so I guess that rules me out but stay in touch anyway, it's early days.

  • Aggggghhhh that background colour is rank! You need to make the products the main focus, not the website.

The iPad Dock - will it fit an iPhone 3GS or 4 with bumper or case? Test it and see… because it's really hard to get docks for the phones that fit when you have a case (which most people do).

If you could get a good deal on that dock that has the sliding connector thing, you'd be onto a winner. This is the type of thing…

    http://www.dealextreme.com/p/charging-docking-station-for-ip…

    • Ha righto I need to think about the yellow. The dock's not much good with the iphone and case. They are designed to keep the ipad pretty firm so there's not enough free space. That deal extreme site is crazy. How can they ship stuff so cheaply? I thought absorbing the shipping cost into the price was a good idea but the costs are so high. They are selling iPad docks for $5.80 delivered! How on earth can they deliver something from Hong Kong here and still make any money on that? I'll have to think about either differentiating in some other day (perhaps offer guaranteed postage next day on that basis that people would prefer to get something quickly) or maybe stay away from these types of products. But the bigger the product the more expensive to ship so it's tough.

      • That deal extreme site is crazy.

How can they ship stuff so cheaply?

        http://www.dealextreme.com/forums/Forums.dx/Forum.-100~threa…

Personally, i think businesses like this has a deal with HK post, say pay HK Post $xxxxxx and get unlimited shipping

How on earth can they deliver something from Hong Kong here and still make any money on that?

They make very very little money off each product, but however, with a business like DX, very little profit with large quantities being bought will equal a large profit

        • Hi mate thanks for that thread, just the costs for delivering from port on Australia to an address alone would be more than those prices allow for so I don't think that could be the whole story. Fair enough if most of their orders are bigger so the shipping costs are lower but then the costs are usually done on weight anyway and why wouldnt' they max a minimum orderif that were the case - I just ordered an iPhone case for $1.70 - they'll be p*ssed @ me!

        • +1

Deal Extreme is the RETAIL site - you can buy wholesale cheaper in bulk via…

          http://www.volumerate.com/products.vr/category.0

Here you go - US$2.15 each if you buy 50… but you must pay the freight

          http://www.volumerate.com/details.vr/sku.48592

(yes, slightly different to your one - just an example)

        • That's crazy cheap llama, still I can understand bulk savings if you order a few hundred but I don't get ordering 1 item and only paying $4.30 international when Australia Post charges $4.55 to post it to the next suburb! Still I know there are plenty of people out there who are happier to deal with an aussie seller who can post the next day so I think I'll still get in these sorts of products despite not being able to sell that low.

  • Get a better server, site is down. Looks terribly unprofessional when that happens.

  • Yeah but its back up again and the last 34 iphone screen protectors went in about the last 4 mins, My nokia needs no silly screen protector!

I like the site and the colour of the yellow, I think keep it that plain yellow it will help people remember the site. Just dont add more black no need to be looking like Dick smith.

  • Had to restart the server to add more resources. Added another 50 screen protectors to make up for it. Might start with some more resources next time lol.

    • Well 150 freebies is still good. got you on the front page here, will need to keep the deals coming though to keep people looking and remembering dtm.

I have one suggestion that has nothing to do with the site layout but since you're asking for advice I would say to proof read your descriptions, there is a few minor spelling and there be a little improper grammar used in arounds ya posts.

  • oh there is so much I want to say here

honestly .. it seems you have some real potential

but the rough edges ..well it needs tweaking

and no I had not seen this thread before commenting on your new account you made to promote your freebie

anyway that aside…you seem keen so keep plugging away

  • Softer background colour would be good-maybe a cool refreshing green
Only 3 items or will there be more?

    • I'm just going to stock up to 4 deals at a time, there is capacity for more but I don't really have the manpower to manage too many products at this stage. Guess I'll have to make the 4 deals particularly good.

  • Nice site. Just snagged myself a iPad dock. :)

I like the yellow motif, and I think you should keep it if you want to keep that brand, but I would suggest perhaps cutting it up with a bit of whitespace. Perhaps if you leave the logo/navigation in bright yellow, then have the content in white backgrounded divs?

Have a look at a couple of other sites that use a yellow branding motif for some inspiration. e.g.

    http://www.yellowpages.com.au/
    http://www.commbank.com.au/

  • Hi guys thanks for the comments, I'm working on products for the next little while but I'll get onto the background once that is done - point taken! Thanks for posting those 2 sites, big help. Natt please seem my comments on the deal, I wasn't promoting the deal I was responding to comments and I had to create another account (this one, which is called Discount Deals) to enable me to reply to comments since ozbargain restricts. I wanted to be able to respond to people while the deal was running. Anyway, free USB is still on the table ha ha.

  • Another suggestion:

From mainpage—>Very hard to read this part(as yellow and white are both bright colours)

    Get 5% off
Our Loyalty Program is simple. Update your facebook status with a message about Discount Deals and get a 5% across the board discount.
Want more than 5%? Hit us up on live chat let's do a deal.

either change the background colour(as planned) or simply change the font colour :)

  • Yellow background has been surgically removed from the site, thanks for the suggestions I think it looks better, let me know if you agree. Might have to do a hard refresh to see the latest.

    • Yellow background has been surgically removed from the site,

haha yeah, i get what you mean "surgically removed", looks way better now, yellow looks more appealing than before

    • no offense.. but the yellow is still 'too much'…. i thought i stepped into a yellow pages affiliate (and they don't have that much yellow).

      • really?!

i thought it was alright considering what it was before the 'renovation'
i guess its just up to our opinions

  • Received the item +1 from me

Hi guys we are doing another iPhone 4 screen protector giveaway right now, we have 250 to give away. Any chance someone could put the deal up, the system won't let me put it up. Free 2 gig USB to the person who puts it up, ta. DD.

    • +1

      ok i do it
btw forget about the 2GB usb, no need to hassle about it

  • Hey I want to do some sort of competition for these 2 Gig USBs. I've got a few of them and I want to give them away. What do you think is reasonable? I'd like to get something out of it like get a few extra Facebook fans or something. Some sort of competition? Or reward for updating their FaceBook status? I don't want to p*ss people around too much but they cost me about $5 each so I don't want to just randomly give them away if that makes sense.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

    • +1

      hmmm….
i will say use them on promotional
      i.e.

      Some sort of competition?

On FB, tell your fans to try to promote as many of their friends to join your facebook (idk how FB works so bear with me LOL), and then you could like tally up

Or reward for updating their FaceBook status?

you have currently 64 fans, that's already a $320 loss
but then how many users will eventually end up doing that, i would say about 150 all up , which is about $750 loss
although you will get a decent amount of fans

      cost me about $5 each

first i was like $5 for 2GB, really?!, but then i saw the image of it
      http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=172367772809887&set=a…
and i was like good deal

      My Tips and Opinions

      • when trying to find your FB via Google, i could barely find it
        http://www.google.com.au/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=d…
i found it via your direct site and then pressed the FB link

      • All business start up small and eventually get big
        i.e. Ozb(from a few members in '06 to over 40000{i think})

      • Get to xxx amounts of Facebook fans and then do something big,
i.e. when you reach 100 fans you will give out another set of screen protectors(idk, or do something cheap)

Otherwise, that's all i can give
and Good luck in the near future

      BTW, Don't forget your goal

I’m not keen to just sell cheap end of the line stuff, I want to sell things that people want to buy - perhaps even seasonal stuff as an example.

    • Just rushing through and stumbled across this … wanted to thank you for my screen protector … will keep the card that came with it and look forward to buying something soon. GOOD LUCK.

  • I've decided to give away a free 2 Gig USB to anyone who suggests a decent slogan via our Facebook page http://discountdeals.com.au/index.php/suggest-a-slogan/ is this the kind of think I can submit as a bargain? Proly not hey it's more of a competition?

    • think I can submit as a bargain?

      bargain, no
      forum, yes
but prepared to give heaps though

      • I've got 80?

        • yeah seems good enough
i would probably do best 80
not first 80 as if it were first 80, you could get responses that are not really meaningful
          idk, my opinion

        • Ok maybe I'll do 50 and keep a few spare.

    • That's correct — competition should be posted in the forums.

  • +1

Will post it tomorrow or something but for now it's up here http://discountdeals.com.au/index.php/suggest-a-slogan/

  • Hi guys thanks for all of your help with this site. It was a fun ride but the sale of my main business fell through so I can no longer pursue Discount Deals and have listed it for sale on Flippa.com http://goo.gl/ieUTJ

    Thanks again

    DD
