32" Full HD LCD TV... Okano any good?

Looking at getting a TV tonight for a mates bday and saw this one at JB Hifi.

OKANO 32"
1920 X 1080 Resolution
HDMI Input
Built in HD Tuner

$399

Is there any better deals going around or should I just get that one? My mate wouldn't be too fussed with the brand especially if I'm the one buying it…

  • OK? ahhhh NO!!!

    just kidding.

sure, why not? probably made in the same factory as every other panel.

If it lasts 5 years then great.

by then they will introduce SHD TV and purple ray DVD players so yiou'll have to upgrade.

just buy it. decent resolution + response time + HD tuner. less than $400. why not?

you might be able to pick upsomething similar in specs for $20 or $30 less but hey less than $400 is cool.

It's at JB - negotiate. or get a dvd player thrown in with it. do a deal etc.

    *the S stands for Super

    • Pretty much sums it up!
If you can get a non FullHD for a few $$ less, go for that. Unless you're planning to use it as a monitor (ie sit pretty close to it) you won't notice the loss of pixels anyway.
Anything "Brand Name" will be $550ish and higher. You'll get a longer lifespan from most of the brand name products (they use less energy, therefore run cooler, therefore will die slower), but is that worth the price premium?

  • double post

  • So I went to JB yesterday and had a look at the Okano and quite frankly the picture looked crap. You definately get what you pay for. They had a bluray playing and it made it look like a DVD…

Anyway gonna have a look at some other tv's today and raise the budget up a bit, even though I'm buying it as a gift.

  • +1

Not sure how much you want to pay, but I got the samsung 32” c550 in early January at bing lee for $459. Heres my receipt.

Hopefully someone can price match for you. There has been people trying to get this price matched but not too many stores will do it, as they arent making too much on it. Its a good tv so maybe ring a couple of places and see what sort of price they can do for you. Bing Lee Fairfield were willing to do $485 for the same Samsung TV with a bit of negotiating.

  • thanks for the heads up kimba, that looks like a good deal, I'm willing to go up to $500.

  • Dick Smith have one of their own brands (they have so many…) for $329, $312 if you know someone who works for Woolworths.

All of my smaller TVs are Dick Smith brands (1 DSE and 2 VIVO, none of this one I must admit) and honestly, I can't tell the difference between them and my brothers Bravia. It's definitely worth going into the store and having a look.
