Activiating Simcard While Overseas. Will It Work?

Hi,

I'll be traveling to 2 diff coutries next week and aim to use my Existing Phone number while there for business reasons.

Now, the first country, found it will be cheapest with Telstra 10$ day pack.
2nd Country (USA), cheapest if I go with Vodafone 5$ day roaming.

Now, is it possible to activate and transfer my number from telstra to Voda before I board the second flight? or do activations/transfer need the sim to be in Australia?

Cheers.

As long as you can do all the steps over the Internet and any SMSes are sent during the process you have to take action on can be received.

The $5/day roaming with Vodafone is only available with Postpaid packages. They have a different roaming fee structure for prepaid.

Usually, with postpaid, you have to order online and wait for them to send you a SIM. If you do it at a store, the SIM gets activated at the point of sales. I'm not sure if you can delay the activation process.
You may want to double check on that.

I've activated prepaid SIMs while overseas before, and it worked well.

  • The only way that this would be possible would be to sign up to the Vodafone plan prior to leaving, and keeping whichever number they give you. Take that SIM overseas with you, and when it comes time to use the Vodafone SIM, contact them online/over the phone and request to port a number across - you’ll need to know your Telstra account number for this.
Within a couple of hours, your number will leave the Telstra SIM and be on the Vodafone SIM, overwriting whichever number was initially on there.

Keep in mind that this will be your new service at this point, so you can only do this if not in contract at Telstra (or willing to pay a fee). Also Make sure whichever Vodafone plan you pick is the appropriate one for you once back in Australia.

  • Thanks for your help guys!!!
